Phare des Mamelles
Phare des Mamelles occupies a privileged position near the Mamelles lighthouse and the towering African Renaissance Monument, giving it panoramic ocean views that no other venue in Dakar can match. The restaurant and lounge spreads across an open terrace that catches the Atlantic breeze, with indoor seating available for the occasional rainy evening. The kitchen serves French-Senegalese fusion dishes that draw on both culinary traditions without forcing the combination. Cocktails are mixed competently, and the wine list includes French imports alongside South African selections. Capacity is around 120 across indoor and outdoor seating. The venue works best as a sunset destination, with the light dropping over the ocean creating a backdrop that justifies the slightly higher prices. After dark, the atmosphere shifts to a lounge setting with ambient music and softer lighting. The crowd is international: French expats, diplomats, visiting professionals, and Senegalese couples celebrating occasions.

Full Review
Phare des Mamelles is a different kind of Dakar nightlife experience. There's no dance floor, no DJ pushing beats past midnight, no bottle service competition. What there is: one of the finest sunset views on the West African coast, competent cocktails, and a kitchen that takes both its French and Senegalese influences seriously.
The terrace is the draw. Set near the Mamelles lighthouse on a hillside overlooking the Atlantic, the west-facing orientation puts the sunset directly ahead of you. On clear evenings, the sky cycles through a sequence of colors that makes the cocktail in your hand feel secondary. The African Renaissance Monument, that massive bronze statue on the neighboring hill, catches the last light and adds drama to the panorama.
The food deserves mention. The kitchen doesn't just serve French food with a Senegalese label. The fusion is genuine: thieboudienne-inspired risotto, grilled fish with yassa sauce, French pastry techniques applied to tropical fruits. Some dishes work better than others, but the ambition is real and the execution is usually solid.
Cocktails are competently mixed, nothing revolutionary but reliably good. The wine selection leans French, which makes sense given the expat clientele, with enough variety to satisfy different preferences. Prices are at the top of Dakar's range but still modest by European standards.
The venue's limitation is its hours. Closing at midnight means it doesn't function as a late-night destination. The smart play is sunset drinks and dinner at Phare des Mamelles, then a taxi to Patio Club or Just 4 U for the rest of the night. This two-venue combination gives you the full range of what Almadies offers: refined elegance followed by raw musical energy.
