Danny Doolans
Danny Doolans is Auckland's biggest Irish bar, spread across three levels on the Viaduct Harbour waterfront. The ground floor is a traditional pub with timber panelling, a long bar, and screens showing rugby, cricket, and football from around the world. The first floor has a more relaxed lounge setup with views over the harbour. The rooftop level opens in good weather and hosts DJ sets on weekends. Live music plays seven nights a week on the ground floor stage, covering everything from acoustic solo acts on Monday to full bands on Friday and Saturday. The venue pulls a broad crowd: tourists, office workers, expats, and locals who've been coming for years. Capacity across all levels is substantial, easily over 400, making it the largest single venue in the Viaduct.
What to Expect
A big, energetic pub that delivers exactly what it promises. Walk in and you'll find a traditional bar downstairs with live music on stage, screens showing sport in the corners, and a crowd that ranges from quiet pint drinkers to groups celebrating loudly. The noise level climbs steadily through the evening.
Loud, packed, and reliably fun. The energy level depends on what's on the sports screens and how good the band is. Weekend nights are boisterous. Midweek is more relaxed.
Live music nightly. Acoustic covers on weeknights, full rock and pop cover bands on weekends. DJs on the rooftop playing chart hits, pop, and party music on Friday and Saturday nights.
Casual. It's a pub. Shorts, jeans, whatever you're wearing is fine. No dress code enforcement.
Sports fans, groups wanting a guaranteed lively atmosphere, visitors looking for an easy entry point into Auckland nightlife, and anyone who enjoys live cover bands.
Cards and cash accepted on all levels. Contactless payment available. Tab system works well for groups.

Insider Tip
The ground floor gets loud and packed on weekend nights. Head upstairs to the first floor for a calmer drink with harbour views. Live music typically starts at 8 PM; check their social media for the weekly lineup. The rooftop is cash-and-card but tends to run slower service than the main bars.
Full Review
Danny Doolans fills the large-format pub role that every waterfront district needs. It's not trying to be cool or exclusive. It's trying to serve good beer, play live music, show sport on big screens, and keep a crowd entertained until 3 AM on weekends. On those terms, it succeeds.
The ground floor is the main event. The bar is long enough to serve multiple customers simultaneously, which helps when the place is packed. Beer selection covers standard domestic and international taps plus a few craft options. Cocktails are competent but not the reason you're here. The live bands vary in quality but the good ones create an atmosphere that spills out onto the waterfront.
Upstairs offers a different experience. The first floor lounge is quieter, with comfortable seating and views through floor-to-ceiling windows over the marina. It's where couples and older groups tend to gravitate. The rooftop level adds summer value with open-air drinking, DJ sets, and harbour views that compete with Dr Rudi's a few buildings away.
The food is pub fare executed reliably. Fish and chips, burgers, and meat pies dominate the menu. Nothing surprising, nothing disappointing. Service speed fluctuates with crowd size. Friday and Saturday nights see wait times at the bar stretching past five minutes during peak hours. The tab system helps if you're staying a while.
Danny Doolans isn't the coolest venue on the Viaduct, but it's the most consistently full. That means something.
The Neighborhood
Danny Doolans sits on the Viaduct Harbour promenade with water on one side and the Viaduct Events Centre (home of Dr Rudi's) behind it. The Britomart laneways are a 10-minute walk east. Several other waterfront restaurants and bars line the same stretch of the Viaduct.
Getting There
From Britomart station, walk west along Quay Street for about 10 minutes. The venue is on the harbour side of the Viaduct Basin. Uber dropoff on the Viaduct Harbour access road or Halsey Street works best. Water taxis from Devonport dock nearby.
