Freeman & Grey
Freeman & Grey occupies a converted villa on a residential side street in Freeman's Bay, a few minutes' walk from Ponsonby Road. The venue uses the house's original rooms as intimate drinking spaces, with each room offering a slightly different atmosphere. The front parlour has a bar and cocktail service. A middle room has low couches and soft lighting. The back opens onto a garden courtyard with a separate bar and covered seating area. The villa's residential architecture creates a feeling of drinking in someone's home, which is exactly the point. The cocktail menu is shorter than the dedicated cocktail lounges on Ponsonby Road but well-curated, with a focus on gin-based drinks and New Zealand wines. Capacity is around 80 across indoor and outdoor spaces. The crowd skews toward neighbourhood regulars and Ponsonby workers who want somewhere quieter than the main road.
What to Expect
Walk through a garden gate into what looks like a residential villa. Inside, the rooms are arranged for drinking and conversation rather than dancing or loud socializing. The pace is slow and the mood is warm. The courtyard in back feels like a private garden party on a good evening.
Residential, warm, and genuinely relaxing. The multi-room layout means you can find your own pocket of quiet even when the venue is busy. The garden adds a dimension that indoor-only bars can't offer.
Background playlists playing jazz, acoustic, and soul at low volume. The venue doesn't host live music or DJs. Quiet conversation is the primary sound.
Smart casual. The villa setting and older crowd make a neat appearance feel appropriate. Nothing strict, but flip-flops and gym shorts would look out of place.
Couples looking for a quiet, atmospheric spot. Small groups who prefer conversation over noise. Gin enthusiasts. Anyone wanting a break from Ponsonby Road's main strip.
Cards and contactless accepted. Cash works. No table service; order at whichever bar is nearest to your room.

Insider Tip
The garden courtyard is the highlight in summer but has limited covered area if it rains. The front parlour is the cosiest room in winter. Ask about the gin selection; they stock over 30 varieties. Wednesday is the quietest night and the best time for a relaxed visit.
Full Review
Freeman & Grey proves that a bar doesn't need a dramatic concept to stand out. The formula is simple: take a beautiful old villa, furnish it with comfortable seating, stock a good bar, and let the building do the rest. The execution works because the space itself is the attraction.
The front parlour has the bar and most of the cocktail action. It's small, seating maybe 20, with the villa's original fireplace and timber floors creating a warmth that air conditioning and design consultants can't replicate. The cocktail menu focuses on gin, which suits the setting. A classic G&T here, made with one of their 30-plus gins, is exactly as satisfying as it should be.
The garden courtyard transforms in summer. Festoon lights, native plants, and covered seating areas create an outdoor drinking space that rivals Golden Dawn's but with a fraction of the crowd. On a warm Saturday afternoon, sitting in this garden with a glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc feels like the best version of Auckland. Winter pushes everyone indoors, where the fireside rooms come into their own.
Service is friendly and unhurried, matching the venue's pace. Staff clearly like working here, which shows in how they interact with regulars and visitors alike. The food menu is minimal, just enough to absorb alcohol. Eat before you arrive.
Freeman & Grey isn't a destination in the way that Ponsonby Social Club is. It's a neighbourhood gem that people stumble onto and keep returning to. The location on a side street means it never gets the foot traffic that Ponsonby Road venues see, which keeps the atmosphere intimate. That's a feature, not a bug.
The Neighborhood
Freeman's Bay is a residential neighbourhood between the CBD and Ponsonby. The venue sits on a quiet side street a few minutes' walk from Ponsonby Road's main strip. The Victoria Park Market and its restaurants are nearby. Walking to the Viaduct waterfront takes about 15 minutes.
Getting There
Walk from Ponsonby Road south into Freeman's Bay, about 5 minutes. From the CBD, walk west through Victoria Park. Uber from Britomart takes about 5 minutes. The venue is on a residential street, so look for the garden gate and villa signage.
