Dr Rudi's Rooftop Brewing Co.
Dr Rudi's Rooftop Brewing Co. operates from the seventh floor of the Viaduct Events Centre, overlooking the Viaduct Basin and Auckland's harbour. The venue combines a rooftop brewery, bar, restaurant, and a bowling alley into a single space that covers over 500 square metres. The outdoor terrace wraps around two sides of the building and provides unobstructed views across the water to Devonport and Rangitoto Island. The beer is brewed on-site, with a rotation of 8-10 taps covering their core range plus seasonal releases. The pizza menu is designed for sharing and pairs well with the beers. On summer evenings the terrace fills quickly with an after-work crowd taking advantage of the late sunlight and harbour views. A four-lane bowling alley at the back adds an activity option that keeps groups entertained between rounds.
What to Expect
Step out of the lift on the seventh floor and the view hits you before anything else. The harbour stretches out below, sailboats dot the basin, and Rangitoto's silhouette sits on the horizon. The space itself is large and airy with an industrial brewery aesthetic. The bowling alley rumbles in the background. On a warm evening the terrace buzzes with energy.
Relaxed, social, and view-driven. The space is big enough that it never feels crushingly packed, even on busy nights. The bowling adds a fun, casual element that keeps the mood light.
Background music during the day, transitioning to upbeat DJ sets on Friday and Saturday evenings. House and disco-influenced selections that match the rooftop party atmosphere.
Casual. This is a rooftop brew pub, not a cocktail lounge. Anything from activewear to smart casual works. Summer means sunglasses and light clothing.
Groups looking for activities alongside drinks. Date nights with harbour views. After-work gatherings on warm evenings. Anyone who wants craft beer in Auckland's best rooftop setting.
Cards and contactless everywhere. Cash accepted but almost nobody uses it. Bowling can be booked and paid online.

Full Review
Dr Rudi's gets by partly on its location, but the execution is stronger than the typical tourist-trap rooftop. The house beers are genuinely good. The pilsner is clean and drinkable, the pale ale has enough hop character to keep craft beer fans interested, and the seasonal releases show ambition. Guest taps add variety from the wider New Zealand craft scene.
The pizza menu does the job well. Thin bases, quality toppings, and sizes designed for sharing across a group. Combined with the bowling alley, the food and activities give Dr Rudi's a completeness that most bars lack. You can spend an entire evening here without needing to move on, which is unusual for Auckland nightlife.
The terrace is the headline attraction. On a clear summer evening, the views across the Viaduct Basin to the harbour bridge and Rangitoto Island are genuinely beautiful. Winter reduces the appeal since the terrace is partly covered but not enclosed, and Auckland's rain can shut outdoor seating down quickly. The indoor space is pleasant but lacks the magic of the outdoor area.
Service varies with busyness. Staff are friendly and competent during normal hours, but Friday evening rush can slow things down at the bar. The layout helps because the space is wide enough to accommodate the crowd without bottlenecks. Compared to the ground-level Viaduct bars, Dr Rudi's offers a better atmosphere and better beer, though you'll pay for the elevation.
