15 Below at Soneva Fushi
15 Below is the underground wine and cheese cellar at Soneva Fushi resort in Baa Atoll. Located below ground level on a tropical island, the concept alone sets it apart. The cellar holds over 500 wine labels stored in temperature-controlled conditions, displayed along stone walls with atmospheric lighting. The space accommodates about 20 guests in an intimate cave-like setting with a long tasting table and smaller private nooks. While not a nightclub or bar in the traditional sense, 15 Below functions as the most exclusive drinking experience in the Maldives. Guided tastings, food pairings with the resort's cheese selection, and private dinners are the format. The sommelier runs sessions that range from introductory overviews to deep dives into specific regions.
What to Expect
Descending into a cool, stone-lined cellar on a tropical island creates an immediate contrast with the beach above. The temperature drops, the humidity disappears, and you're surrounded by wine bottles on every side. The sommelier guides the experience, which lasts 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on the format.
Cave-like intimacy with dim lighting, cool temperatures, and the quiet focus of a proper wine cellar.
No music. The focus is entirely on wine, cheese, and conversation.
Smart casual. The underground setting is cooler than the rest of the resort, so a light layer is practical.
Wine enthusiasts and couples looking for an intimate, refined evening experience.
Resort room charge. Included partially in some all-inclusive plans.
Price Range
Wine tastings USD 80-200 per person, pairing dinners USD 150-350 per person, wines by glass USD 20-60
Prices in USD. EUR equivalent: tastings ~EUR 74-185, pairing dinners ~EUR 139-324
Hours
Tastings by appointment, typically 6 PM to 10 PM
Insider Tip
Book the tasting session at least a day in advance. The cheese pairing is worth the extra cost. If you're a serious wine collector, ask about their rare vintages collection, which isn't on the standard menu.
Full Review
Soneva Fushi built 15 Below as the kind of experience that justifies the resort's premium positioning. The entrance is easy to miss, a staircase near the main restaurant that leads underground into a space carved out of the island's coral foundation.
The cellar itself wraps around a central tasting table. Stone walls hold racks of bottles organized by region. The lighting is warm but low, creating shadows that give the space depth. Temperature hovers around 16-18C year-round, which feels practically arctic after a day on a Maldivian beach. Bringing a light sweater is practical advice the resort gives and guests consistently ignore.
The sommelier is the engine of the experience. Soneva staffs the position with genuine experts who can calibrate their approach to everything from curious beginners to collectors who own their own vineyards. Standard tastings include five wines with paired cheeses, many of which Soneva produces in their own cheese room on the island. Specialty sessions dig deeper into Burgundy, Napa, or Old World vs. New World comparisons.
As a nightlife experience, 15 Below is about as far from a nightclub as possible. But within the Maldives context, where conventional nightlife doesn't exist, it fills the role of an evening destination with real sophistication. The intimacy of the space, rarely more than a dozen guests at once, creates a sense of exclusivity that larger resort bars can't match.
The wine prices are high but not outrageous by resort standards, and the quality justifies the cost. The cheese program is a genuine highlight. Where 15 Below falls short is in spontaneity. You can't just wander in. Everything requires booking, and availability during peak season can be tight.
