Hohe Pforte, Cologne

Pascha is a licensed multi-floor brothel at Hornstrasse 1 in Cologne, operating since 1972 and widely described as one of Europe's largest establishments of its kind. The twelve-story building has dedicated floors for adult entertainment workers, each organized as a Laufhaus: workers rent rooms independently, set their own rates, and are self-employed rather than employees of the building. At peak operation, the building housed approximately 120 workers across multiple floors. The building also contains a ground-floor nightclub and bar that's open to the public without requiring access to the upper floors. Pascha filed for insolvency in 2020 during the pandemic closure, and subsequent operations have involved changes in management structure and reduced floor occupancy compared to the pre-2020 period. As of 2026, the building continues to operate at reduced capacity. The ground-floor bar runs independently of the adult services and attracts a mixed late-night crowd from the surrounding area. Entry to the upper floors requires passing through a staffed reception desk with a small cover charge. Security personnel maintain order at the entrance and in the reception area.

What to Expect

The building exterior is identifiable from Hornstrasse. The main entrance has a small canopy and reception staffed by security personnel. The ground-floor bar is on the right after entry and is a normal late-night bar in terms of its operation and atmosphere. Access to upper floors is through a separate internal staircase from the reception area.

Atmosphere

The ground-floor bar runs with a late-night club energy, loud and dark. The upper floors are quieter, corridor-based, and the atmosphere is transactional rather than social.

Music

Ground-floor nightclub: commercial house, pop, and R&B on weekends. The upper floor environment has no fixed music component.

Dress Code

No enforced dress code. The ground-floor bar has a mixed late-night crowd in standard going-out clothes. Security at the door may refuse entry based on demeanor rather than clothing.

Best For

Visitors specifically researching Cologne's adult entertainment scene, late-night bar visitors in the Hornstrasse area, anyone curious about the ground-floor bar as a nightlife venue

Payment

Cash only on the upper floors. Ground-floor bar may accept EC-Karte, but cash is safer.

Price Range

Entry charge: EUR 5-10. Services on upper floors: EUR 30-50 for a short visit, EUR 60-100 for 30 minutes, EUR 100-180 for one hour. Ground-floor bar: cocktails 10-14 EUR, beer 4-6 EUR.

Services: ~$32-54/£25-42 short visit, ~$65-108/£50-83 30 minutes. Bar drinks: cocktails ~$11-15/£8.50-11.50

Hours

Ground-floor bar: from approximately 22:00 daily. Upper floors: hours vary and are subject to current occupancy levels. Confirm current hours directly.

Insider Tip

The ground-floor bar is accessible without going to the upper floors and doesn't require explaining yourself to anyone. If you're visiting the upper floors, go through the main reception rather than assuming alternate entry points exist. Rates are posted or agreed verbally with individual workers before any service. Don't skip this step. Weekday afternoons have lower traffic on the upper floors; weekend evenings are busiest.

Full Review

Pascha's physical presence on Hornstrasse is larger than most visitors expect. The twelve-story building takes up a significant frontage on the street, and the signage, while not subtle, has been scaled back from the more prominent branding of earlier decades. The building's history is well-documented in Cologne: the 2001 sponsorship deal with 1. FC Köln, which the German Football League subsequently prohibited, made national news and gave Pascha a cultural notoriety that goes beyond its function as an adult venue. Walking in, the ground-floor bar is immediately to the right of the entrance. It operates as a functional late-night bar with table service, drinks at standard Cologne bar prices, and a music level that makes conversation possible. The clientele on any given night is mixed: some people are there specifically because of the building's association, some are just using a late-opening bar in the neighborhood, and some are waiting for friends. The bar has no special character beyond its location. The upper floors are a different operation. The reception process is brief: show ID, pay the entry charge, receive a token or wristband, and access the staircase. The floors are numbered and organized with different character on each level, with workers renting rooms independently under the standard Laufhaus model. At reduced capacity (post-pandemic), the building feels less full than the old accounts describe. Some floors may have fewer doors open than others. The working conditions for the individuals inside are subject to German labor protections for registered sex workers, including the right to refuse clients without explanation. Visitors who approach this with basic courtesy and follow the procedural norms (no photography, closed doors mean no, agree rates before anything begins) will not have problems.

The Neighborhood

Pascha is at Hornstrasse 1, near the Hansaring in Cologne's inner northwest. The surrounding blocks are residential and commercial with some small bars and an adult shop or two in the immediate vicinity. The U-Bahn network reaches the area from Hansaring station (about a five-minute walk), and the Friesenplatz station is approximately 900 meters south.

Getting There

S-Bahn or regional train to Hansaring station is the closest stop, approximately five minutes on foot. U-Bahn to Friesenplatz (lines 3, 4), then walk north on Friesenstrasse and west on Hansaring for about ten minutes. Taxis from the Hauptbahnhof take five to seven minutes.
