Pik Dame

Pik Dame opened in 1963 and the aesthetic has not budged since. Red lamps, small velvet sofa corners, merry-go-round horses mounted at the bar, and the kind of permanent dimness that makes 3 AM feel like a reasonable time to be alive and drinking. The doors do not even open until midnight, which tells you everything about the clientele it attracts and the intention behind the whole operation.

The crowd is the Bahnhofsviertel after hours at its most democratic: sex workers, bartenders finishing their shifts at other venues, artists, night owls, and curious tourists who read about it somewhere and decided to see for themselves. Everyone shares the same small room. The music varies from cabaret to pop depending on who is in control of the stereo. Beers are EUR 4, drinks EUR 4 to 8.

In Frankfurt's nightlife landscape, Pik Dame is a time capsule. The Bahnhofsviertel has gentrified dramatically over the past decade, with cocktail bars and restaurants replacing many of the neighborhood's rougher establishments. Pik Dame predates all of that and persists as a reminder of what the quarter looked like before the renovation wave swept through.

This is a true late-night spot; do not show up at 10 PM expecting something to be happening. The energy builds after 1 AM and peaks around 4 in the morning. The Bahnhofsviertel crowd is eclectic by nature, so there is no dress code worth mentioning. Keep your wits about you as you would in any area adjacent to a red-light district, but the bar itself is safe and well-managed by experienced staff.
