Funk Club
Funk Club operates from a basement space on Tkalciceva 19, accessible through a narrow staircase that drops you into one of Zagreb's more intense small-venue experiences. The room holds about 150 people across a compact dance floor and a bar area, with ceilings low enough that taller guests might brush them. DJ sets run the gamut from funk and disco to house, techno-lite, and hip-hop depending on the night. The sound system punches hard for the room size, and the low ceilings trap the energy in a way that makes the space feel packed even at half capacity. Weekends are the main event, with the dance floor filling after midnight and staying active until 3 or 4 AM. The crowd is predominantly local, leaning young (20s to early 30s), and less tourist-heavy than the bars at street level.
What to Expect
Descending the stairs, you'll feel the bass before you see the room. The basement is dark, with minimal decoration beyond some neon and the DJ booth at one end. The dance floor is intimate enough that you're always in the middle of the action. Air circulation is limited, so it gets warm quickly once the room fills.
Sweaty, loud, and compressed. The kind of basement club where the energy comes from proximity and shared movement.
Funk, disco, house, hip-hop, and techno-lite depending on the night and the DJ
Casual to smart casual. The basement setting and dancing mean anything too formal is impractical. Sneakers are the standard footwear.
People who want to dance in a small, high-energy room without the production overhead of a big club.

Full Review
The entrance on Tkalciceva is easy to miss. A small sign and a narrow doorway lead to stairs descending into Funk Club's single room. The transition from the street-level bar scene to the basement feels dramatic: it's darker, louder, and the temperature rises noticeably within minutes of the room filling.
The DJ booth sits at one end of the dance floor, with the bar occupying the opposite wall. Sightlines to the DJ are clear from most positions, and the dance floor is small enough that everyone shares the same musical moment. The sound system is good for the space, delivering clear bass without the distortion that plagues some basement venues.
DJ selection varies by night. Some nights lean heavily toward funk and disco classics, which matches the venue name and brings out a crowd that actually wants to dance. Other nights push deeper into house or electronic territory. The inconsistency is part of the charm; checking their social media before going tells you what you're walking into.
Drinks are basic but functional. The bar doesn't try to compete with Tkalciceva's cocktail scene. You order beer, vodka, or simple mixed drinks and get back to the floor. Service is quick because the menu is simple.
The ventilation issue is real. By 1 AM on a Saturday, the basement is noticeably warm. People step outside regularly to cool down, creating a revolving door effect on the staircase. This is a feature, not a bug; the Tkalciceva street scene provides natural cooling breaks between dance sessions.
Compared to the Jarun Lake clubs, Funk Club offers a more intimate, rougher experience. No VIP sections, no bottle service, no pretension. Just a basement, a DJ, and a dance floor.
The Neighborhood
Sitting at street level on Tkalciceva but operating underground, literally. The surrounding bars at street level serve as natural pre-game spots. Step out for air and you're immediately on one of Zagreb's best bar strips.
Getting There
On Tkalciceva Street, a 3-minute walk north from Trg bana Jelacica. Look for the small entrance between street-level bars. All tram lines serve the main square.
