Alcatraz Craft Beer Bar

4.4
(450 reviews)
Tkalciceva, Zagreb

Alcatraz Craft Beer Bar sits at a corner position on Tkalciceva 49, with one of the street's larger outdoor terraces that catches both foot traffic and afternoon sun. Inside, the bar runs about 16 taps rotating between Croatian craft breweries (Zmajska Pivovara, Garden Brewery, Nova Runda, Medvedgrad) and international selections from Belgium, Germany, and the UK. The interior mixes exposed brick with prison-themed decorations that nod to the name without overdoing it. The crowd is beer-focused rather than cocktail-oriented, ranging from after-work locals to tourists sampling the Croatian craft scene. Staff know their beer and can walk you through unfamiliar local options. The terrace is the main draw on warm evenings, offering prime people-watching on Tkalciceva's busiest stretch.

Full Review

Alcatraz earns its spot on Tkalciceva through consistency rather than spectacle. The tap list rotates regularly and always features a good mix of Croatian microbreweries alongside European imports. Zmajska's IPA and Garden Brewery's pale ale appear frequently. Staff will pour a small taster of anything on tap without hesitation, which is the right approach for a venue trying to educate visitors about Croatian craft beer.

The terrace is the main asset. Its corner position catches foot traffic from both directions on Tkalciceva, making it one of the best spots for watching Zagreb's evening unfold. Tables are small but sufficient for two or three people with glasses. On busy nights, standing at the terrace edge with a pint is perfectly normal.

Inside, the prison theme is present but restrained. Some bars and chains on the walls, a few thematic touches. It doesn't dominate the experience. The bar itself is well-organized, with taps clearly labeled and a chalkboard listing current offerings. The snack menu is limited to standard bar food: sausages, cheese plates, nuts.

Pricing is fair. Croatian craft pints at EUR 4-6 represent good value for the quality. Imported specialties cost more but stay reasonable. The per-pint cost is lower than the cocktail bars further down Tkalciceva, making this a budget-friendly option for an extended session.

The closing time (midnight, 1 AM on weekends) means Alcatraz works better as an early-to-mid evening stop than a late-night destination. Use it as a launchpad for the rest of Tkalciceva or the Jarun Lake clubs.

The Neighborhood

Central Tkalciceva, surrounded by dozens of other bars, restaurants, and cafes. The Dolac Market is a 5-minute walk south and makes for a good afternoon activity before evening drinks.

Getting There

On Tkalciceva Street, a 4-minute walk from the main square. All tram lines stop at Trg bana Jelacica.
