BAUM

Chapinero, Bogotá

BAUM is a 900-capacity techno club at Calle 33 #6-24 in southern Chapinero, opened in 2013 with an actual living tree planted in the center of the dance floor and the DJ booth wrapped around its trunk. The venue programs international techno residencies alongside Colombian residents including DJ Hernan Cayetano. The sound system is among the best in Bogotá, calibrated by acoustical engineers for the unusual room shape, and the lighting rig builds around the central tree as the focal point. The crowd is serious electronic music fans who arrive late and stay until 6 AM, with the energy peaking from 3 AM. The cover sits between 50,000 and 70,000 COP depending on the booking; drinks are standard Chapinero priced. The venue's location south of the main Chapinero strip means most arrivals come by Uber rather than as part of a bar crawl.

Full Review

BAUM's address on Calle 33 puts it south of the main Chapinero nightlife strip, in a slightly grittier section of the locality. The entrance is unmarked; bouncers run ID and bag checks before allowing entry. Inside, the venue opens into a high-ceilinged industrial space with the centerpiece tree dominating the room.

The tree is real and the architecture is built around it. The DJ booth forms a circle wrapping the trunk; the dance floor radiates outward in concentric arcs; the lighting rigs hang from the ceiling above the canopy. The format creates a unique listening experience: the music comes from the center rather than from a stage, and the crowd surrounds the booth on all sides.

The sound system is the actual reason serious electronic music fans rate BAUM among Bogotá's best. The acoustical setup handles the unusual room shape; the bass extends without distortion at peak volume; the high frequencies stay clear at the back of the floor. The lighting matches: laser arrays and LED panels integrated with the tree, with strobes synchronizing to the music.

The booking calendar runs serious. Colombian residents (DJ Hernan Cayetano is the longest-running) hold the regular slots; international bookings bring techno acts from Berlin, Amsterdam, and the wider European touring circuit. The programming leans more underground than Octava and slightly less curated than Video Club, with a focus on the unusual physical setup as part of the experience.

Compared with Video Club, BAUM is roughly similar in capacity but architecturally distinct. Compared with Octava, it's smaller, less polished, and more committed to the underground. The southern Chapinero location requires care: always Uber to and from the venue; the surrounding blocks are not safe to walk at night.

The Neighborhood

BAUM sits in southern Chapinero south of the main strip. The walk from Video Club is 25 minutes and not advised; Uber is the practical option.

Getting There

Uber, Cabify, or InDriver to Calle 33 #6-24. From Centro the ride costs 10,000-15,000 COP; from Zona Rosa 15,000-22,000 COP.
