Mes Amis
Mes Amis is a French-influenced bar and brasserie on Lockhart Road that attracts a crowd of expats and finance professionals looking for a more relaxed Wan Chai experience. The interior splits between a front bar area open to the street and a deeper dining section with booth seating. A small outdoor terrace along Lockhart Road has tables and chairs where regulars sit watching the street traffic. The wine list is the standout, with a selection of French and international bottles that's unusually good for a Wan Chai bar. Wine by the glass starts at 70 HKD. Cocktails are competent at 90-130 HKD. The food menu covers French brasserie standards: steak frites, moules, croque monsieur, and charcuterie plates. Capacity is about 90 across indoor and outdoor seating.
What to Expect
The open front lets you see into a warm, amber-lit space with a wooden bar and shelves of wine bottles. The terrace tables are often occupied by groups in conversation. The noise level is moderate, allowing you to hear your companions without shouting. French café music or jazz plays softly.
Relaxed, conversational, and slightly upscale. A pocket of French refinement on Lockhart Road.
French jazz, café music, and acoustic selections at background volume. Music is atmospheric, not the main attraction.
Smart casual. The crowd tends to be well-dressed office workers still in their day clothes. Clean and neat is sufficient.
Wine drinkers, after-work professionals, couples who want a relaxed dinner-and-drinks venue. People who find Lockhart Road too rowdy and want a calmer option.
Cards and cash accepted. No minimum spend.

Full Review
Mes Amis provides something Wan Chai's other bars mostly don't: a comfortable place to sit, drink good wine, eat decent food, and have a conversation without raising your voice. In a district dominated by pubs, sports bars, and late-night drinking holes, this French-influenced bar fills a different niche.
The wine program is the main reason to come. The selection is thoughtful, with a range of French regions represented alongside international picks. By-the-glass options rotate, and the staff can guide you through the list if you're unsure. At 70-120 HKD per glass, the pricing is fair for Hong Kong.
The food supports the drinking nicely. Steak frites is reliable, the charcuterie board is good for sharing, and the croque monsieur is a solid late-night option. It's not Michelin-quality French cuisine, but it's well above pub food standard.
The outdoor terrace is the venue's best asset. On a Wan Chai evening, sitting outside with a glass of wine and watching the Lockhart Road traffic pass creates a surprisingly European feeling. The terrace seats about 20 people and fills quickly after 7 PM.
The crowd is older and more settled than the pub scene nearby. Expect professionals in their thirties and forties, many of them long-term Hong Kong residents. Solo visitors are welcomed at the bar, and the atmosphere encourages conversation between strangers without the forced social dynamics of a pub.
Mes Amis doesn't compete with the late-night Wan Chai scene. It closes at 2 AM, and most of its business is done by midnight. It works best as an early-evening destination, a dinner spot, or a civilized alternative to the Lockhart Road pub crawl.
