Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Joe Bananas has anchored Wan Chai nightlife since 1987, making it one of Hong Kong's longest-running entertainment venues. The space on Luard Road operates as a restaurant during dinner hours, transitions to a bar in the late evening, and becomes a club after midnight on weekends. The interior is large by Wan Chai standards, with a restaurant section at the front, a long bar in the middle, and a dance floor at the back with a DJ booth and lighting rig. Total capacity is around 250. The venue has reinvented itself multiple times over nearly four decades, surviving the transitions from military R&R hub to expat hangout to mixed locals-and-tourists destination. Weekend cover charges run 150-250 HKD with a drink included. The crowd spans ages and nationalities, united mainly by the fact that they know the name.

What to Expect

Early evening, it's a restaurant with a bar. The front section has tables set for dinner with a menu of international comfort food. Past the bar, the dance floor area is quiet and dark, waiting for later. After midnight on weekends, the lights go down, the DJ turns up, and the dance floor fills with a crowd that ranges from 20-somethings to people who've been coming since the 1990s.

Atmosphere

Nostalgic, unpretentious, and crowd-dependent. Good nights are genuinely fun; quiet nights feel like drinking in a large, empty restaurant.

Music

DJ plays commercial pop, classic rock, 80s and 90s hits, and crowd requests on weekends. The music caters to the venue's diverse age range rather than targeting a specific scene.

Dress Code

Smart casual for club hours on weekends. During dinner and early bar hours, casual dress is fine. No shorts or flip-flops after midnight.

Best For

Visitors who want a piece of Hong Kong nightlife history. Mixed-age groups where everyone needs to find common ground. Late-night dancing after the pubs close.

Payment

Cards and cash accepted throughout. No minimum spend during bar hours.

Price Range

Cover 150-250 HKD Fri-Sat (includes 1 drink), beer 55-75 HKD, cocktails 80-120 HKD, dinner mains 120-200 HKD

Cover ~$20-33/~18-30 EUR, beer ~$7-10/~7-9 EUR, cocktails ~$10-16/~9-14 EUR

Hours

Mon-Sat 11:30 AM to 5 AM (kitchen until 11 PM, club hours Fri-Sat from midnight)

Insider Tip

Eat dinner here to skip the cover charge on weekends. The dance floor doesn't get going until midnight, so time your arrival accordingly. Thursday night is a good compromise between weekend energy and weekday prices.

Full Review

Joe Bananas occupies a unique position in Hong Kong's nightlife. It's not the coolest club, the best restaurant, or the cheapest bar, but it's been here since 1987 and it's still standing. That longevity counts for something in a city where venues open and close with the seasons.

The dinner service is decent but not the reason to come. International comfort food: burgers, steaks, pasta, and Asian dishes that cover the bases without excelling at any of them. The main value of eating here is avoiding the weekend cover charge, which applies to the late-night club hours.

The transition from restaurant to club happens gradually. Around 11 PM, the dinner tables clear, the lighting dims, and the DJ starts. By midnight on a Friday, the dance floor is active. The music policy is democratic: enough contemporary tracks to keep younger patrons moving, enough classic hits to keep older regulars singing along.

The crowd is Joe Bananas' strongest asset and its biggest variable. On a good night, the mix of ages, nationalities, and energy levels creates a party that feels inclusive and fun. On a slow weeknight, the cavernous space can feel empty and the atmosphere struggles.

Service is efficient at the bar and attentive during dinner. The staff has a professional, unfazed demeanor that comes from decades of managing late-night crowds. Security is present but low-key.

Compared to LKF's clubs, Joe Bananas is cheaper, more relaxed, and less concerned with image. Compared to Wan Chai's pubs, it offers a dance floor and late hours that the pubs can't match. It fills a middle ground that's kept it relevant for almost forty years.
