The Hub

Sok San Road, Siem Reap

The Hub is an open-air community bar that serves as an informal meeting point for Siem Reap's long-stay expat population. The layout is simple: a long bar counter along one wall, a pool table in the center, dart boards toward the back, and a mix of high stools and plastic chairs filling the rest of the space. There's no pretense toward the tourist market, which is exactly why some tourists prefer it. Drinks are priced at the lower end of the Sok San Road range. The crowd on any given night will include NGO workers, guesthouse owners, English teachers, travel writers on deadline, and the occasional overlander who found the place on a forum recommendation. Conversations start easily because the layout is designed for it rather than against it. Sports coverage runs on the TVs mounted above the bar. The pool table is always in use from about 8 PM onward, and there's an informal tournament structure on certain nights of the week. The Hub doesn't market itself aggressively, which is consistent with how most of its customers found it.

Insider Tip

Full Review

The Hub is the kind of bar that accumulates regulars the way a city pub does: through proximity, consistency, and the fact that the same faces appear often enough that you learn their names. It doesn't have a particularly interesting interior or a designed atmosphere, and that's precisely why it works.

The pool table is the social engine. If you want to play, put your name on the waiting list posted near the cues. Waiting time is usually 15-20 minutes on a busy night. The table is free, which means the bar earns its money from the drinks you consume while waiting.

The bar counter itself is long enough to accommodate a dozen people without crowding. Staff move efficiently between customers and know most regulars by order. Draft Angkor is the best value on the menu. The spirits selection is wider than the modest appearance suggests.

Sports coverage is a consistent draw. Premier League, Champions League, and ATP events all get the satellite treatment. On big match nights, the bar fills quickly and stays full. Booking a stool by arriving early is more effective than trying to squeeze in later.

Food is not available inside, but a few street vendors park nearby in the evenings, and delivery from restaurants on Sok San Road is common. Staff won't object to food arriving from outside.

The crowd is self-selecting. Backpackers who stumble in looking for bucket cocktails don't usually stay. People who value the ability to hold a conversation while playing pool do. The transition between the two is usually apparent within 10 minutes.

The Neighborhood

The Hub sits on Sok San Road in the mid-block section most developed for tourism. Junglebox Wine Bar is nearby. Several guesthouses within walking distance add to the regular customer base.

Getting There

From Pub Street, take a tuk-tuk heading west on Street 5, then north onto Sok San Road. The ride is 5-7 minutes and costs $1-2. Grab is available. Walking from the Old Market takes about 12 minutes.
