Candy's Apartment
Candy's Apartment occupies two levels of a heritage building on Bayswater Road in Kings Cross. The ground floor is an intimate cocktail bar with low ceilings, exposed brick, and a long timber bar where staff mix drinks with visible care. Upstairs opens into a small dance floor where DJs spin funk, soul, and disco from Thursday to Saturday. The venue holds around 200 people at capacity, which it hits most Friday and Saturday nights by midnight. Entry is free before 10 PM on most nights, with a AUD 10-15 cover after that. Cocktails run AUD 20-28 and the list changes seasonally. The crowd is a mix of Kings Cross locals, Potts Point residents, and people who've come specifically for the music. The age range tends toward late 20s to early 40s, older than the nearby Kings Cross Hotel crowd.

What to Expect
A two-part experience. Downstairs feels like a proper cocktail bar where conversation is possible. Upstairs is a sweaty, compact dance floor with quality DJs and a crowd that actually dances. The transition between the two happens naturally as the night progresses.
Warm and social downstairs, energetic and sweaty upstairs. The music is always good enough to dance to, and the crowd responds accordingly.
Funk, soul, disco, and occasional house music sets
Smart casual. No thongs (flip-flops) or sportswear. Collared shirts not required but you'll fit in better with one. Most people dress somewhere between casual and going-out clothes.
Couples and small groups who want good cocktails early and dancing later without the mega-club experience.
Cards accepted everywhere. Tap-and-go (contactless) is standard across Australia.

Insider Tip
Arrive before 10 PM to skip the cover charge and secure a spot at the bar downstairs. The upstairs dance floor gets uncomfortably packed after midnight on Saturdays, so claim your space early if you want to dance.
Full Review
The entrance on Bayswater Road is easy to miss if you're not looking for it. A narrow stairwell or ground-floor door leads into the main bar, which runs along the left wall with booth seating on the right. Lighting is dim and warm. The bartenders know their craft and will happily adjust drinks to your taste if you ask.
Upstairs is where the character shifts. A dedicated DJ booth sits at one end of a dance floor that probably holds 80 people comfortably but regularly squeezes in 120. The sound system is good for the room size, loud enough to feel but not so overwhelming that you can't speak to someone next to you. The music selection genuinely sets this place apart from most Kings Cross venues; the DJs favour vinyl and deep cuts over chart hits.
Service slows down after midnight when the venue fills up, especially at the upstairs bar. Ordering downstairs and carrying drinks up is a practical workaround. Bathrooms are clean but small, expect a queue on Saturday nights.
Compared to World Bar next door, Candy's is more grown-up and music-focused. You won't find teapot cocktails or student-night promotions here. The trade-off is a higher average spend and a crowd that takes the music seriously. For visitors who want to experience Kings Cross nightlife without the strip club scene, this is one of the better options on the street.
The Neighborhood
Bayswater Road runs parallel to Darlinghurst Road, the main Kings Cross strip. The surrounding blocks have restaurants, cafes, and a few other bars. Potts Point, the upmarket neighbourhood immediately north, is a 5-minute walk and offers quieter wine bars and late-night dining options.
Getting There
Kings Cross station (T4 line) is a 3-minute walk. Exit via the Darlinghurst Road exit and turn right onto Bayswater Road. Uber drop-off is straightforward on Bayswater Road outside the venue.
