Universal
Universal is a multi-level venue at 85 Oxford Street that bridges the gap between pub, cocktail bar, and nightclub. The ground floor operates as a bar with a long counter and booth seating. The first floor is a lounge area with DJs on weekends. The rooftop terrace offers open-air drinking with views along Oxford Street. The venue attracts a genuinely mixed crowd spanning different ages, orientations, and purposes. Some people come for after-work drinks; others stay until closing. Entry is typically free before 10 PM and AUD 10-20 after. Drinks run AUD 14-18 for beer and AUD 20-28 for cocktails.

Full Review
Universal occupies a sweet spot on Oxford Street. It's not specifically LGBTQ+ like ARQ or Stonewall, not specifically straight like some CBD venues. The crowd is genuinely mixed and the venue handles that well.
The ground floor does duty as a standard bar. It's well-designed with enough space to accommodate the after-work crowd without feeling empty at quieter times. The bar team moves quickly and the beer selection includes a decent range of craft options alongside the standard taps.
The first floor has more ambition. On weekends, DJs play disco and house to a crowd that actually dances. The space is large enough to move in but small enough to maintain atmosphere. Lighting is club-appropriate without being overbearing.
The rooftop is where Universal distinguishes itself from most Oxford Street bars. Open-air drinking along one of Sydney's most recognizable streets has natural appeal. Tables fill quickly in warm weather, so the happy hour window (5-7 PM on Fridays) is the best time to secure one. The bar up here is separate from the downstairs operation and keeps its own pace.
Compared to other Oxford Street venues, Universal offers the best range of experiences in a single location. You can have a quiet beer downstairs, dance on the first floor, and cool off on the rooftop all in one night without crossing the street. That flexibility makes it a useful hub venue.
