The Oxford Hotel
The Oxford Hotel stands at the corner of Oxford Street and South Dowling Street, a heritage pub that has operated on this corner for over a century. The ground floor is a classic Australian pub with a long timber bar, pub meals, and a comfortable, lived-in feel. The first floor is a cocktail bar with a separate entrance and a moodier atmosphere. Upstairs again, a late-night dance floor runs on Friday and Saturday nights. The venue serves as a neighbourhood anchor, drawing Darlinghurst and Surry Hills locals who use it as their regular. Beers are AUD 11-15, cocktails AUD 18-25, and pub meals AUD 20-35. Entry is free to the pub; the upstairs dance floor may charge AUD 10-15 on weekends.

Insider Tip
The pub meals are genuinely good and well-priced for the area. Eat here before heading to other Oxford Street venues. The first-floor cocktail bar is often overlooked by the Oxford Street crowd, making it a good quiet-drink option.
Full Review
The Oxford Hotel rewards people who like pubs. The ground floor has the feel of a place where the bar staff know half the room by name. The timber bar is long enough to seat a dozen people, and the tables fill with a neighbourhood crowd from late afternoon onward. The pub meal menu covers the classics (steak, fish and chips, burgers) and does them well enough that you'd eat here on purpose rather than out of convenience.
The first-floor cocktail bar is a different proposition. Darker, quieter, with a shorter menu of properly made cocktails. It feels like it belongs in a different building. This level is underused by the Oxford Street crowd, which works in your favour if you want a quiet drink.
The dance floor on the top level operates weekends only. It's small, fitting maybe 100 people before it feels crowded. The DJ plays accessible dance music and the crowd comes from both the pub downstairs and off the street. It's not a destination nightclub, but it extends the evening for people who don't want to walk to ARQ or Stonewall.
The heritage building itself is worth noting. The corner position gives it natural light during the day and an imposing presence at night. The bones of the building are good and the renovations over the years have been sympathetic rather than destructive.
Service is pub-speed: fast, no frills, friendly. Bathrooms are recently updated and cleaner than many Oxford Street options.
The Neighborhood

Getting There
Bus routes 373 and 374 on Oxford Street. Museum station is a 12-minute walk. Central station is a 15-minute walk via Surry Hills. Rideshare drop-off on South Dowling Street or Oxford Street.
