La Cantina del Barrio
La Cantina del Barrio sits on the periphery of Barrio Antioquia's tolerance zone, closer to the residential sections of the neighborhood. The bar occupies a ground-floor corner space with an open front that faces the street. Plastic tables and chairs seat about 25 people, split between the interior and the sidewalk. A small kitchen behind the bar produces empanadas, arepas, and other simple snacks that attract locals looking for food alongside their drinks. La Cantina del Barrio fonctionne comme une passerelle entre les sections résidentielles et la zone de tolérance du Barrio Antioquia. Pendant la journée, il ressemble à n'importe quel autre coin de quartier de la classe ouvrière de Medellin. Les gens s'arrêtent pour des empanadas et une boisson fraîche, regardent la télévision et repartent. La nourriture est simple et bon marché, et les empanadas seraient meilleures que ce que le prix suggère.
La transition se produit le soir. Vers 19 ou 20 heures, la foule des mangeurs diminue et la foule des buveurs prend le relais. Les hommes qui se dirigent vers la zone de tolérance s'arrêtent ici d'abord pour une bière bon marché ou une dose de courage. D'autres s'arrêtent en sortant. Le bar devient une zone de transit plutôt qu'une destination.
L'emplacement périphérique lui confère un profil de risque légèrement différent de celui des barres plus profondes dans la zone. Vous êtes plus proche des rues résidentielles normales et plus éloigné de l'activité de la zone de tolérance centrale. Mais la distinction est mince. Les mêmes éléments criminels qui opèrent dans la zone s’étendent jusqu’à ces blocs périphériques, surtout la nuit tombée.
La nourriture mérite d'être notée car c'est la seule caractéristique qui distingue La Cantina des purs débits de boissons. Une empanada à 2 000 COP et une bière à 4 000 COP constituent la combinaison repas et boisson la moins chère de Medellin. Que cela vaut le détour dans le Barrio Antioquia est une question dont la réponse est évidente pour les touristes : ce n'est pas le cas.

Street-facing bar with colored lights and a basic sound system. One of the more visible spots in the zona, open from early evening with rock-bottom beer prices.
