Seoul's NYE Format
Seoul's New Year's Eve runs through three distinct zones connected by metro. The official ceremony is at Bosingak Bell in Jongno: 33 strikes at midnight (representing the 33 heavens in Buddhist cosmology) by 12 rotating VIPs including the Seoul mayor. Around 100,000 attendees fill the Jonggak Station area; the streets close from 23:00, with police channeling pedestrians. The ceremony broadcasts live on Korean TV. Free.
The Itaewon and Hannam-dong club scene is the international-friendly nightlife zone. Cakeshop (the long-running electronic institution), Soap Seoul (the trendy younger spot), Vurt (techno), Pistil, and Mike's Cabin run NYE packages with cover KRW 50,000 to KRW 180,000 (USD 38 to USD 140). The crowd is mixed Korean-international with English commonly spoken at the staff level.
Gangnam (specifically Apgujeong and Cheongdam-dong) runs the high-end alternative. Octagon (rated one of the world's top 10 clubs by DJ Mag) and Arena run polished NYE packages at KRW 80,000 to KRW 300,000 cover (USD 60 to USD 230). Strict door codes; smart dress mandatory, no shorts, no sneakers, no logo t-shirts. K-pop celebrities frequently attend.
Lotte World Tower
Seoul Sky on the 117th-123rd floors of Lotte World Tower (the highest observation deck in Asia outside of Shanghai/Burj) runs a NYE viewing package. KRW 65,000 to KRW 180,000 per person depending on package. The viewing covers most of Seoul and across the Han River; fireworks visible from multiple districts simultaneously.
Han River Sunrise
A common Seoul NYE itinerary: Bosingak Bell at 23:30, taxi or metro to Itaewon for a club from 01:00 to 04:00, then taxi to a Han River park for the first sunrise of the year. Yeouido Hangang Park and Banpo Hangang Park are the standard sunrise spots. First sunrise of January 1 in Seoul falls around 07:48. Hot honey-citron tea or coffee from the park kiosks is the traditional accompaniment. The sunrise tradition is more locally Korean than the foreign-tourist Bosingak Bell experience.
