Vinpearl Discovery Resorts, Hon Tre Island

Overview and Location

Vinpearl Island is the local name for Hon Tre, the 32-square-kilometer island sitting across Nha Trang Bay about 3 kilometers off the central beach. Almost the entire developed half of the island is operated by the Vinpearl group: five resorts (Vinpearl Resort, Vinpearl Luxury, Vinpearl Discovery 1, 2, and 3, and Vinpearl Beachfront), the VinWonders Nha Trang theme park, the Vinpearl Harbour entertainment district, an 18-hole golf course, and the supporting transportation, dining, and retail infrastructure. The other half of the island remains undeveloped jungle and fishing village.

Access is via the Vinpearl cable car, which crosses the bay in roughly 12 minutes on the world's longest sea-crossing aerial line. The cable car departs from Cau Da Port at the southern end of central Nha Trang and operates from approximately 9 AM to 9 PM. Round-trip fare for non-resort guests is 800,000 VND ($32), which includes entry to VinWonders Nha Trang. Resort guests use a separate, later-running speedboat service.

The character of nightlife here is fundamentally different from anything on the mainland. Vinpearl is a self-contained resort ecosystem rather than a city. Bars close earlier, the crowd skews family and couples rather than backpackers, prices run roughly twice what you'd pay in the Old Quarter, and the volume stays controlled out of consideration for the surrounding resort accommodation.

Legal Status

Prostitution is illegal in Vietnam under national law, classified as a "social evil" alongside drugs and gambling. The government runs periodic enforcement campaigns with administrative fines and detention.

Vinpearl Island sits at the cleaner end of the Vietnamese hospitality spectrum. The Vinpearl group operates the entire entertainment infrastructure on the island as licensed resort hospitality businesses. The bars, lounges, and nightclubs program standard drink and music offerings without the gray-area solicitation that defines some mainland KTV venues. There is no Vinpearl equivalent of the hostess karaoke industry that operates inland of Tran Phu.

The corporate operating model is the main reason for this. Vinpearl is owned by Vingroup, Vietnam's largest private conglomerate, and the brand reputation is closely guarded. The resorts cater predominantly to family tourism (domestic Vietnamese families, Korean and Chinese group tours, Russian families on package holidays), with adult-only nightlife playing a supporting role rather than a destination function.

Foreign visitors drinking and dining at any Vinpearl venue face zero legal exposure. The risks here are purely commercial (resort markup pricing, the practical challenge of getting back to the mainland after the cable car closes).

Costs and Pricing

Vinpearl runs at resort pricing. Expect to pay roughly twice what you'd pay for comparable drinks in central Nha Trang.

Beer and Drinks

Local beers (Saigon, Tiger, 333) at resort bars cost 100,000 to 150,000 VND ($4-6). Imported beers (Heineken, Corona, premium European) run 150,000 to 250,000 VND. Draft beer is available at Vinpearl Harbour's Little Bui Vien zone at slightly lower prices, around 80,000 to 120,000 VND.

Cocktails at the resort pool bars and lounges run 250,000 to 400,000 VND ($10-16). Wave Bar at Vinpearl Luxury prices most of its signature menu between 280,000 and 380,000 VND. The Wonder Club at Vinpearl Harbour runs comparable cocktail pricing. TPT Wine House sits at the higher end, with glass pours from 250,000 VND and bottles from 1,200,000 VND ($48).

Buffet dinner packages at the resort restaurants run 800,000 to 1,500,000 VND per person ($32-60), depending on which resort and which evening. These typically include selected drinks.

Cable Car Access

Round-trip cable car for non-resort guests is 800,000 VND ($32), inclusive of VinWonders Nha Trang entry. Resort guests have free transfer on the speedboat service operating from Vinpearl's own port at Cau Da.

VinWonders day passes (separate from cable car) run around 950,000 VND ($38) for adults. Combined cable car plus VinWonders is the standard ticket type sold to day visitors.

Resort Stays

Vinpearl Resort Nha Trang and Vinpearl Beachfront price rooms from 2,500,000 to 5,000,000 VND per night ($100-200) in shoulder season, climbing to 6,000,000 to 12,000,000 VND ($240-480) during peak periods (Vietnamese summer, Tet, Russian Orthodox Christmas). Vinpearl Luxury is the highest-priced property, with villas from 8,000,000 VND ($320). Vinpearl Discovery 1, 2, and 3 sit at the lower end, with rooms from 1,800,000 VND ($72).

Street-Level Detail

The Vinpearl Harbour entertainment district is the closest thing on the island to a pedestrian bar street. The complex is a planned waterfront development with three themed zones: Monaco, Fonville (sometimes spelled Fontville), and Indochine. Fonville is the nightlife zone, with The Wonder Club, Li'a, the shisha lounges, and the Little Bui Vien themed bar street all sitting within a five-minute walk of each other.

The architecture is European-pastiche resort, with cobblestone-look streets, low-rise stone buildings, and ornamental lighting. The whole development feels like a controlled-environment recreation of a Mediterranean coastal town rather than an organic district. Music volume stays moderate. Crowds are mixed Vietnamese domestic, Korean, and Chinese visitors, with smaller numbers of Russians and Westerners.

The resort bars (Wave Bar at Luxury, Infinity Pool Bar at Beachfront, the lobby bars at the main Resort) are scattered along the island's western and southern coasts. Each is associated with a specific property and reachable on foot or by Vinpearl shuttle from the cable car terminal and main resort entrance.

VinWonders Nha Trang sits at the eastern end of the developed area, a theme park with rides, water park, and outdoor entertainment. The park closes by 9 PM. Vinpearl Harbour stays open until midnight on busier nights.

The non-developed half of the island remains a working fishing community at Bich Dam village. The village is accessible by road from the resort zone but doesn't see meaningful tourist traffic and has no bar infrastructure relevant to this guide.

Safety

Vinpearl Island is the safest nightlife zone in Nha Trang. The island operates as private resort property with controlled access, integrated security, surveillance camera coverage, and a clientele dominated by family tourism rather than party tourism. Violent crime is essentially nonexistent. Petty theft is rare.

The main practical risk is logistics. The cable car stops running around 9 PM. After that, only resort guests can return to the mainland via the speedboat service. Day visitors who miss the last cable car face an expensive private boat charter (1,000,000 to 2,000,000 VND, $40-80) or a forced overnight at one of the resorts. Plan return transport before drinking.

Resort markup pricing is the secondary risk. Some visitors don't realize how much more expensive Vinpearl runs versus the mainland until the bill arrives. Confirm prices when ordering. The bigger venues all run transparent menus with prices in writing.

Sun and heat exposure during daytime visits to VinWonders and the beach bars is the underrated risk. Vietnamese summer (June through August) is brutal on Hon Tre, with limited shade in the open spaces around the resort grounds. Carry water and reapply sunscreen.

Swimming at the Vinpearl beaches is generally safer than at central Nha Trang. The sheltered bay reduces rip current risk. Resort lifeguards are on duty during posted hours at the major properties. Don't swim outside designated areas or at night.

Driving on Hon Tre is limited to resort shuttles, golf carts, and the small road serving the fishing village. There is no scooter rental on the island.

Cultural Context

Vinpearl is a corporate resort environment rather than a slice of Vietnamese local life. The character of the island is shaped almost entirely by the Vinpearl group's branding and operations strategy. Staff training emphasizes service standards aligned with international hotel chains. English, Russian, Korean, and Chinese are all spoken at the major properties. Vietnamese culture appears as themed performance (water shows, traditional dance evenings) rather than as organic daily life.

The crowd mix tilts toward family and group tourism. Vietnamese domestic families on weekend breaks. Korean and Chinese tour groups on multi-day packages. Russian families on charter holidays. Western tourists are a smaller presence, typically resort guests at the higher-end properties.

The dress code is resort-casual everywhere. Smart-casual after 8 PM at the Wonder Club, Wave Bar, and TPT Wine House. Swimwear at the pool bars during the day. The atmosphere stays calm and consideration-focused. Loud, drunken behavior is uncommon and would be moderated quickly by security at any of the major venues.

Cable car access is the practical constraint that shapes everything. Day visitors arrive late morning, spend the day at VinWonders and the beaches, have dinner and early drinks at the harbour, and ride back before 9 PM. Resort guests have a different rhythm, with full late-evening access to the bars but a fundamentally lower-energy experience than mainland Nha Trang.

Scam Warnings

Resort-environment scams are uncommon on Vinpearl Island. The bigger risks are commercial rather than criminal.

Resort restaurant menu confusion happens occasionally when visitors order from English menus that don't clearly list prices or include service charges and 10 percent VAT in the headline price. The total bill arrives 20 to 30 percent higher than the listed menu price. Ask explicitly whether the menu price includes tax and service.

Day-pass upselling at the cable car terminal: staff push package upgrades that include VinWonders access, dining vouchers, and other add-ons that may not match what you actually plan to do. The standard cable car plus VinWonders combo is the most common ticket; additional add-ons should be evaluated against actual planned use.

Independent boat operator scams at Cau Da Port: some unaffiliated operators offer cheaper "alternative routes" to Vinpearl Island. These boats don't have proper docking access, drop visitors at unofficial points on the island, and require expensive return transport. Use only the official Vinpearl cable car or speedboat service.

Nearby Areas

The Cau Da terminal area on the mainland is the gateway to Vinpearl. The area immediately around Cau Da has limited nightlife of its own, with a few small Vietnamese restaurants and the cable car operations. Transport back to central Nha Trang (Tran Phu Beach, the Old Quarter) takes 15 to 20 minutes by Grab car or Xanh SM.

Bich Dam fishing village sits on the southern shore of Hon Tre, accessible by road from the Vinpearl resort zone. The village is a working community with no tourist infrastructure.

Mun Island and Tam Island, both visible from Hon Tre, are smaller neighboring islands accessible only by private boat charter. They have no bar infrastructure and aren't covered here.

Meeting People Nearby

Vinpearl's resort guest demographic and family-focused programming make casual socializing harder than on the mainland. Resort lobby bars have steady evening foot traffic of resort guests. The Wonder Club at Vinpearl Harbour is the most likely venue to encounter younger international visitors. For broader social options in Nha Trang, see the main city guide and the Old Quarter district page.

Best Times

  • Sunset, 5:30 PM to 7 PM: Wave Bar and the Infinity Pool Bar peak during the bay sunset hour, with cocktails and views as the main draw
  • 8 PM to 10 PM: Vinpearl Harbour fills with day visitors finishing dinner and dipping into the bar street before catching the last cable car
  • 10 PM to midnight: Resort guests have the bars largely to themselves. The Wonder Club programs DJ sets during this window
  • February through August (dry season): Best weather, calm seas, full beach bar operations
  • September through January (wet season): Rough seas can delay or cancel cable car operations. The bars stay open but the bay views are obscured
  • Vietnamese summer (mid-June through August): Peak crowds at VinWonders. The bars stay busier later as more resort guests come through the harbour
  • Friday and Saturday: The Wonder Club runs its highest-energy DJ programming
  • Tet (late January or early February): Resort prices spike, the harbour stays busy with Vietnamese New Year tourism

What Not to Do

  • Do not miss the last cable car back to the mainland if you are not a resort guest. The private boat alternative is expensive and not always available
  • Do not order from menus without confirming whether tax and service charge are included. Resort menu pricing structure varies
  • Do not rely on independent boat operators at Cau Da Port for transport to Vinpearl. Use the official cable car or resort speedboat
  • Do not swim outside designated beach areas. The bay's eastern shore has unmarked rip current zones
  • Do not bring outside food and drink onto the resort grounds. The major properties enforce a no-outside-food policy at bars and pool areas
  • Do not photograph the security operations at the cable car terminal or the resort entry points
  • Do not engage with anyone offering drugs at the harbour or resort properties. Vietnam carries the death penalty for trafficking. Vinpearl security cooperates closely with police
  • Do not expect mainland-style nightlife. The Wonder Club is the loudest venue on the island, and it still closes by 1 AM
  • Do not skip sun protection during daytime visits. The island's open spaces have limited shade
  • Do not assume the cable car runs in heavy weather. Operations pause during storms and high winds, particularly during October through January
  • Do not rely on cash-only payment. Resort venues prefer card payment, and ATMs on the island charge premium fees
  • Do not plan late nights without a resort booking. Day visitors are effectively required to leave by 9 PM
