Le Golfe

La Marsa, Tunis

Le Golfe sits directly on the La Marsa corniche, occupying a prime beachfront position where the Mediterranean laps at the terrace wall during high tide. The restaurant and bar has been a fixture of the coastal strip for years, drawing families at dinner and a drinking crowd later in the evening. The ground floor holds a dining room with tiled floors and large windows facing the sea. Outside, a long terrace runs parallel to the water with metal tables and chairs that fill to capacity on warm weekend nights. The kitchen turns out grilled fish, seafood platters, and standard Tunisian salads. The bar list covers local Celtia and Stella beers, a short wine selection leaning on Tunisian labels like Magon and Domaine Neferis, and basic cocktails. Live music appears on weekends, usually a solo guitarist or small acoustic act playing a mix of French chanson, Arabic pop, and Western covers. Capacity sits around 120 between the indoor space and terrace. The crowd is mixed: La Marsa residents, expat families, and younger groups who drift in after 10 PM.

What to Expect

Walking in from the corniche, you pass through a simple entrance into a tiled dining room with sea-facing windows. The terrace wraps around the building on the water side. At dinner the atmosphere is family-friendly. After 10 PM the families leave and the volume rises as the drinking crowd settles in.

Full Review

Le Golfe works because of its location. Sitting on the terrace with the Mediterranean ten meters away, cold Celtia in hand, grilled fish on the table, you understand why La Marsa residents consider this their local. The setting does most of the work.

The food is honest rather than ambitious. The seafood comes fresh from the morning catch, grilled simply with olive oil, lemon, and herbs. The loup de mer and the gambas are reliable. The Tunisian salad (mechouia, slata tunisienne) is made in-house and tastes like it. The wine list sticks to Tunisian producers, which is fine because wines like Magon Grand Cru and Domaine Neferis drink well in this context.

The transition from restaurant to bar happens organically around 10 PM. The dinner tables clear, the music gets louder, and the crowd shifts younger. By 11 PM on a Friday, the terrace is full of people who came for drinks rather than food. The bar keeps things simple: beer, wine, and basic cocktails. Don't expect craft mixology.

Live music on weekends adds texture without overwhelming conversation. The acts are local musicians who know their audience. French songs get the strongest response from the La Marsa crowd.

The main limitation is weather dependence. The terrace is the draw, and on cold or windy evenings, the indoor dining room lacks the same magic. Summer evenings, when the sea breeze cools the terrace and the sun sets behind the headland, are when Le Golfe is at its best.

The Neighborhood

Le Golfe sits on the La Marsa corniche between the public beach and the clifftop section where La Falaise is located. The Place de La Marsa is a 10-minute walk inland. Other corniche cafes and ice cream shops flank the restaurant on both sides.

Getting There

From the Place de La Marsa, walk toward the sea and turn right along the corniche road. Le Golfe is about 10 minutes on foot. By taxi from central Tunis, ask for the La Marsa corniche. The TGM light rail terminates at La Marsa station, a 15-minute walk from the venue.
