Tempo Club

Tempo Club operates in a basement space near Plaza de la Luna, a small square between Gran Vía and Chueca that has quietly become one of Madrid's stronger corners for live music. The room descends from street level via a narrow staircase and opens into a low-ceilinged space with exposed brick walls, acoustic panels on the ceiling, and a stage only slightly raised from the floor. The layout puts audience and musicians in close proximity, which suits the acoustic and small-group formats that dominate the programming.

The bookings show careful curation. Weekly schedules typically include two or three jazz acts (trio, quartet, occasionally quintet), a soul or blues band, and on some weekends a Latin jazz group drawing on Madrid's strong Cuban and Dominican musician community. Covers are modest and sometimes include a drink, which keeps the place accessible for repeat visits. The sound system and room treatment are better than most Madrid bars at this price point, which is why working musicians often finish their own gigs and come here to listen.

Sunday jam sessions (when they run, which is most weeks) are a local institution. The format puts a house rhythm section on stage and invites sit-ins from anyone who can hold their own, which produces genuinely unpredictable nights: a visiting New York saxophonist on tour might sit in next to a music student from the Reina Sofía conservatory. Monday open-mic nights are more beginner-friendly and cover a wider range of genres.

Compared to Madrid's other jazz rooms (Café Central near Sol, Bogui Jazz in Chueca, Populart near Huertas), Tempo Club is smaller, cheaper, and less formal. Café Central is the most established and has the best national bookings. Tempo Club is where the Madrid jazz scene actually hangs out on their nights off. Drinks are straightforward rather than spectacular, which matters less in a room where the music is the reason to come.
