Pritlicje
Pritlicje occupies a prime spot on the Ljubljanica's left bank at Mestni trg 2, with a wooden terrace that extends to the river's edge. The venue functions as both a bar and a cultural space, hosting DJ sets, exhibitions, discussions, and community events alongside its regular drinking business. The terrace is long and narrow, seating about 30 people directly above the water, with views of the opposite bank's buildings and the castle hill beyond. Inside, the bar area is modest but functional, with artwork on the walls that rotates with the exhibition program. The drinks menu covers craft beer, wine, basic cocktails, and coffee, nothing elaborate but everything served competently. The crowd reflects the programming: culturally engaged, politically aware, and comfortable mixing social drinking with occasional lectures or film screenings. Pritlicje translates to 'ground floor,' which is both a description and a philosophical position about accessibility.

Full Review
Pritlicje combines two things Ljubljana does well: riverside terraces and cultural programming. The result is a venue that functions as a bar most of the time and as a community space when the programming calls for it. Both roles work because the physical setting is exceptional.
The terrace is the star. Sitting at river level, with the water moving beneath the wooden boards and the old town buildings rising on both banks, creates a setting that no interior design can match. On a warm evening, the light on the castle changes from gold to pink to blue as the sun sets, and the terrace crowd shifts from coffee drinkers to wine sippers to beer drinkers without any single transition point.
The cultural programming sets Pritlicje apart from the pure drinking establishments along the riverbank. A Thursday evening might feature a DJ spinning vinyl jazz. A Saturday afternoon could host a discussion about urban planning or a photography exhibition opening. These events don't overwhelm the bar function. They enhance it, giving regulars another reason to stop by and providing visitors with an unexpected dimension.
Drinks are good without being exceptional. The craft beer selection covers Slovenian and international options. The wine list favors local producers. Cocktails are competent but not the focus. This is a place where the setting does the work and the drinks support it.
Pritlicje's one challenge is capacity. The terrace is intimate, which means it fills quickly. The indoor space absorbs overflow but can't replicate the riverside experience. Timing your visit to the early evening maximizes your chances of securing a waterfront seat.
The Neighborhood
Mestni trg is the main square of Ljubljana's old town, facing the town hall. The bar is at river level below the square's terrace. Other riverside bars are within a 2-minute walk in both directions.
Getting There
From the Triple Bridge, walk south along the left (west) bank of the Ljubljanica. Pritlicje is at river level below Mestni trg, accessible via stairs from the square above. Look for the wooden terrace extending over the water.

Other Venues in Old Town

Dvorni Bar
A sophisticated cocktail bar tucked into a courtyard off Dvorni trg, known for creative cocktails and an extensive spirits collection. The intimate space seats about 40 people across a main bar and a small terrace.

Cafe Macek
A two-story cafe-bar in the heart of the old town that's been a Ljubljana institution for decades. The upstairs room with its worn wooden floors and mismatched furniture draws a loyal crowd of students, professors, and night owls.

Ziferblat
A concept bar where you pay by the minute (EUR 0.05/min) for unlimited coffee, tea, and snacks in a cozy living room setting. The unusual pricing model creates a relaxed atmosphere where people stay for hours, reading, talking, and playing board games.

Neboticnik Terrace Bar
A rooftop bar atop Ljubljana's 1933 skyscraper, the first high-rise in the former Yugoslavia. The 360-degree panoramic view covers the castle, the Julian Alps, and the city center. Cocktails are pricier than street level but the setting justifies it.
