Calle La Calzada, Granada

Cafe de los Suenos (Cafe of Dreams) operates as a bar and casual restaurant on La Calzada, recognizable by its colorful facade and the acoustic music that drifts onto the street on weekend evenings. The interior has exposed colonial stonework, wooden tables, and art from local painters on the walls. Capacity is modest, maybe 60-70 seats between indoor and outdoor areas. The venue bridges the gap between restaurant and bar; it's a place where you can eat a full dinner at 7 PM and still be there drinking at 11 PM without the setting feeling wrong for either activity. Live acoustic performers play on the small stage Friday and Saturday nights, covering a mix of Latin standards, folk songs, and occasionally original material. The drink menu covers the basics well. The cocktail list is short but executed competently. Flor de Cana rum is the house spirit and forms the backbone of most mixed drinks. The staff is bilingual (Spanish and English) and accustomed to serving a tourist-heavy clientele.

What to Expect

Walking in from the street, you enter a colorful colonial space with art on the walls and candles on the tables. The acoustic guitar or singer on the small stage fills the room without amplification issues. It feels like a neighborhood bar that happens to be in a tourist zone, not a purpose-built tourist trap.

Warm, artsy, and intimate. The live music keeps it lively without being loud.

Live acoustic: Latin folk, trova, boleros, and acoustic covers of international songs on weekends

Full Review

Cafe de los Suenos fills a spot on La Calzada that the rowdier bars don't cover. It's for the evening when you want music, conversation, and decent food without the volume or energy of a dance venue. The colonial building has been maintained with care, and the art on the walls rotates regularly, giving the sense that someone involved actually cares about aesthetics.

The food menu splits between Nicaraguan dishes and international options. Go local. The gallo pinto is properly seasoned, the plantains are fried right, and the vigoron (a traditional Granada dish with yuca, pork rinds, and cabbage salad) is better here than at most places on the strip. The international items, burgers, pasta, sandwiches, are fine but forgettable.

The live music on Friday and Saturday evenings lifts the whole place. The performers are typically local musicians playing acoustic guitar and singing trova, Latin folk, and bolero standards. The quality varies, but even on an average night, the live music creates an atmosphere that recorded playlists can't match. The room is small enough that you're close to the performer without being on top of them.

Drinks are basic but well-priced. The house rum cocktails are the best option. A Flor de Cana 7 with lime and soda runs about NIO 100 and goes down easily in Granada's warm evenings. Beer is cold and cheap. The wine list is short and overpriced relative to quality; stick to rum or beer.

The outdoor seating puts you in the La Calzada flow, which means vendor interruptions but also excellent people-watching. Inside is better for conversation and music. Cafe de los Suenos draws a slightly older crowd than El Club or the backpacker bars, with more couples and small groups than solo travelers.

The Neighborhood

Cafe de los Suenos is on the main section of La Calzada between Parque Central and Iglesia Guadalupe. Nectar and El Tercer Ojo are within a short walk. The central park and cathedral are a two-minute stroll west. Street food vendors are active on the surrounding blocks until late evening.

Getting There

Walk east from Parque Central along La Calzada for about a block and a half. The colorful facade stands out. A tuk-tuk from anywhere in central Granada costs NIO 20-30.
