La Barra de Chavez

Zona Chapultepec, Guadalajara

La Barra de Chavez occupies a narrow two-room space on a side street off Avenida Chapultepec, its walls covered with vintage Mexican posters and shelves lined with mezcal bottles. The front room holds the bar, a scarred wooden counter with a dozen stools, while the back opens onto a small covered courtyard where groups settle in for the evening. The venue has been operating in Colonia Americana for well over a decade and has the worn-in character of a place that knows what it is. The cocktail menu focuses on agave spirits: mezcal negronis, palomas with fresh grapefruit, and a house margarita made with Jalisco blanco. The crowd skews toward graphic designers, architects, and journalists in their late twenties and thirties. The music stays at conversation volume until around 11 PM, when a DJ takes over with Latin indie and electronic. Capacity is small, around 80 people standing, which means the vibe shifts quickly as the room fills.

Insider Tip

Ask the bartender for the off-menu seasonal mezcal selection; they usually have 3-4 bottles not on the standard list. Arrive before 9 PM for guaranteed courtyard seating. The front bar gets too loud for conversation after the DJ starts, so stake out the back early.

Full Review

La Barra de Chavez doesn't announce itself. The street-level sign is small, the entrance is through a heavy wooden door, and the first impression is of a place that survives on its regulars rather than foot traffic. That's an accurate read. The bar is staffed by two bartenders who move efficiently around each other in a space barely wide enough for the three-person backbar. The mezcal selection is genuinely thoughtful, with bottles from Oaxaca, Guerrero, and San Luis Potosi that you won't find at the tourist-facing bars on Chapultepec proper. A flight of three pours with the bartender's notes is the best introduction. The back courtyard is where the real social action happens on a busy Thursday night. Mismatched chairs, a few low tables, and a string-light canopy create a setting that feels improvised but works well. Conversations start easily here. By midnight on weekends the front room is crowded and the music is up; the back stays calmer. The kitchen doesn't run, but nearby taco stands on the surrounding streets fill that gap. La Barra de Chavez is the kind of bar that defines a neighborhood's character, and Colonia Americana is richer for having it.

The Neighborhood

The bar sits one block east of Avenida Chapultepec in the interior of Colonia Americana, surrounded by studios, small architecture firms, and residential apartments. The immediate block has two other independent bars and a mezcaleria within 100 meters.

Getting There

Rideshare from central Guadalajara (Minerva roundabout area) takes 8-10 minutes. From the Chapultepec Tren Ligero station, walk east on Avenida Chapultepec and turn onto the relevant cross street. The bar is identifiable by the small painted sign and the lack of neon.
