Garage Bar
Garage Bar takes its name seriously: the space was converted from a working auto repair bay, and the transformation kept the high ceilings, exposed concrete, and industrial-grade ventilation of its previous life. Bare bulbs hang from steel brackets, the back wall is raw brick, and the bar itself is a welded steel counter with a wood top. The mezcal selection is the serious draw. The back bar holds around 40 mezcal expressions from Oaxaca, Durango, Guerrero, and Zacatecas, organized by agave variety rather than producer, which signals the approach. The bartenders are knowledgeable in a way that rewards questions: ask about the difference between Espadin and Tobaziche, and you'll get a genuine explanation plus a taste. The music policy leans toward classic rock, punk, and post-punk, played at a volume that respects conversation. A small stage in the back corner hosts occasional acoustic sets and noise experiments on Thursday nights.

Full Review
Garage Bar is the kind of place that exists because someone decided to build the bar they wanted to drink at. The conversion from auto repair workshop was done with a light hand: the architectural bones are preserved, and the bar was built around the space rather than imposed on it. The high ceiling and the old ventilation system mean noise doesn't build up the way it does in smaller bars, which is a real quality-of-life feature. The mezcal program is the main event. The selection at 40 expressions isn't the largest in Guadalajara, but it's curated rather than accumulated. The Espadin section alone runs to 12 bottles from different producers, regions, and production methods. The bartenders can differentiate between them with real authority. A 280 MXN flight of three 30ml pours with guidance is the best use of an hour at this bar if you're unfamiliar with mezcal's range. The rock music at Garage Bar has an authentic relationship with the space rather than functioning as background noise. On Thursday experimental nights, the back-corner stage hosts performances that range from compelling to difficult depending on the act, but the commitment to unusual programming is part of what makes the bar feel alive rather than staged. Beer drinkers are welcome but clearly secondary to the mezcal mandate.
