Monastiri Rooftop
Monastiri Rooftop sits directly above the Venetian harbor at Akti Tompazi 24, offering what many consider the best sunset view in Chania. The terrace looks out over the harbor, the lighthouse, and the water, with the White Mountains visible on clear days behind the old town's rooftops. The drink menu is competent, with cocktails from EUR 10 to 13, wine by the glass from EUR 7 to 10, and beer from EUR 5 to 7. The cocktails are well-made if not boundary-pushing, and the wine selection covers solid Cretan producers. The real product is the view, and the bar knows it. The setup is simple: tables and chairs on a rooftop terrace with an awning for shade. No food menu beyond nuts and olives. The venue arrives at capacity early on summer evenings, often by 8 PM as people position for sunset. No reservation system, so showing up early is the only strategy. The crowd is a mix of tourists who've read the reviews and locals celebrating special occasions. After sunset, the mood shifts as the harbor lights up and the drinking becomes the focus rather than the view. Service can slow during the sunset rush but picks up afterward.
What to Expect
You'll climb a narrow staircase to reach the rooftop, where you're immediately hit with the harbor panorama. A host seats you if tables are available. The space is open-air with some shade from an awning. Before sunset, cameras are out and the atmosphere is anticipatory. After, it settles into a pleasant drinking spot with harbor views under the stars.
Breathtaking at sunset, relaxed and romantic after dark. A location-driven experience.
Chill-out, lounge, and ambient at low volume. The view and the sound of the harbor are the main soundtrack.

Insider Tip
Arrive by 7 PM in summer for a sunset table. The west-facing position means the sunset hits directly over the harbor and lighthouse. After 10 PM the crowd thins and the atmosphere becomes more relaxed and social. Bring a light jacket as the rooftop gets breezy after dark.
Full Review
Monastiri Rooftop isn't about the drinks. It's about sitting on a terrace with an unobstructed view of one of the Mediterranean's most photogenic harbors while the sun drops below the horizon. And on that promise, it delivers completely. The positioning is perfect, with the Venetian lighthouse centered in the panorama and the old harbor curving away on both sides.
The drinks are solid without being remarkable. Cocktails follow standard recipes and are mixed competently. The wine list features several good Cretan producers, and a glass of Vidiano or Assyrtiko pairs well with the setting. Prices are slightly above Chania's average, which is the sunset tax, and it's one worth paying.
The challenge is timing. This isn't a hidden spot. Review sites and guidebooks have all found it, and on summer evenings the terrace fills well before sunset. The early-arrival strategy is the only reliable way to get a table. Standing room sometimes becomes available, but it lacks the same magic. After sunset, a significant portion of the crowd leaves, which opens up seats and shifts the atmosphere from photo-op to genuine bar.
Post-sunset is actually when the bar is most enjoyable for drinking. The harbor lights up, the breeze comes in, and the reduced crowd allows the staff to give better service. If you miss the sunset window, arriving at 10 PM gives you the view, the ambiance, and an available table.
The Neighborhood

Other Venues in Chania Old Town

Sinagogi Cocktail Bar
Set in a converted synagogue near the harbor, this cocktail bar stands out for both its architecture and its drink menu. Stone walls, candlelight, and a bartender who takes requests seriously. One of Chania's most distinctive spaces.

Fagotto Jazz Bar
Live jazz and acoustic performances in a stone-walled basement venue. The program changes nightly, and the quality is consistently high for a city this size. Intimate space that seats maybe 50 people. Reservations are smart on weekends.

Rakadiko Manousakis
Traditional raki bar tucked into a side street behind the harbor. The owner pours his family's own raki and serves Cretan meze plates. This is where locals drink, and it shows. Prices are half what you'll pay on the waterfront.

Boheme Live Music Club
Chania's closest thing to a proper late-night venue. Live bands and DJ sets run until 3 AM on weekends. The music ranges from Greek rock to electronic, depending on the night. Small dance floor that gets crowded fast.
