Habana Lounge

Punda, Willemstad

Habana Lounge brings a Cuban-themed cocktail bar concept to a Punda side street, with exposed brick walls, vintage Havana posters, warm lighting, and a bar that specializes in mojitos, daiquiris, and other Cuban cocktail classics. The interior successfully evokes a Havana drinking den without descending into costume-level theming. A Cuban cigar selection is genuine and well-maintained, with a small smoking area for those who indulge. Live salsa bands play on occasional weekend nights, filling the small dance floor with couples who know the steps and newcomers who try. The crowd mixes Curacaoans who love salsa culture with tourists drawn by the atmosphere and the promise of well-made mojitos. Capacity is around 50, which keeps the space feeling full and energetic even on quieter nights. The bar program focuses on rum-based cocktails using quality Cuban and Caribbean rums.

Full Review

Habana Lounge works because it commits to its concept without overselling it. The Cuban theme could easily become a tourist trap with fake palm trees and Che Guevara T-shirts on the wall. Instead, the exposed brick, warm lighting, and vintage posters create a setting that feels like a bar that might actually exist in a Havana side street, if the drinks were this well-made and the sound system this good.

The mojitos are the test of a Cuban-themed bar, and Habana passes. Fresh mint, proper muddling technique, quality rum, and the right balance of sweet and sour produce a mojito that tastes different from the versions served at resort bars with pre-made mix. The daiquiris receive the same treatment: fresh citrus, quality rum, and attention to proportions. The bartenders clearly enjoy making these drinks.

The cigar selection adds an authentic touch that most themed bars skip. The humidor is maintained properly, and the cigars are genuine Cuban and Dominican brands. A smoking area allows enjoyment without filling the main bar with smoke. Pairing a cigar with a rum cocktail on a warm Punda evening is a specific pleasure that Habana Lounge delivers well.

Live salsa nights are the venue's peak experiences. The small dance floor fills quickly when a band plays, and the close quarters create an intensity that larger venues diffuse. Curacaoans who dance salsa regularly show up for these events, and the skill level on display is impressive. Newcomers to salsa are welcome on the floor and usually find willing teachers among the regulars.

The intimate scale is both Habana's greatest asset and its main limitation. With room for about 50 people, the bar feels full and alive with just 30 patrons. On live music nights, getting through the door can require patience. The small dance floor works for couples and small groups but can't accommodate the crowd that wants to join in when the band hits a peak.

As an evening stop within a Punda and Pietermaai progression, Habana fits naturally between De Gouverneur's sunset cocktails and the later-night options in Pietermaai. Two mojitos and a cigar here, then a walk east to Mundo Bizarro or Miles Jazz Cafe for the rest of the evening.

The Neighborhood

On a Punda side street, inland from the Handelskade. De Gouverneur is nearby for sunset drinks. Iguana Cafe is on the waterfront. Pietermaai is a 5-minute walk east for later-night options.

Getting There
