Tokyo Bar

Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Montreal

Tokyo Bar occupies three floors at 3709 Boulevard Saint-Laurent, making it one of the largest nightlife venues on The Main. Each floor runs a different musical program on weekends: the ground level tends toward hip-hop and R&B, the second floor plays electronic and house, and the top floor shifts between Latin and pop depending on the night. Total capacity sits around 800 across all rooms. The layout lets you move between genres without leaving the building, which is part of Tokyo Bar's appeal for groups with mixed musical tastes. The interior mixes industrial exposed-ceiling design with neon lighting and dark walls. The main bars on each floor are long enough to handle weekend crowds without excessive wait times, though the second floor gets the most congested between midnight and 1:30 AM. Tokyo Bar has been a Saint-Laurent anchor for over a decade, surviving the turnover that claims most Montreal nightclubs within a few years.

What to Expect

Three distinct rooms stacked vertically, each with its own sound system and bar. The ground floor hits you with bass immediately. Stairs between levels get congested after midnight, so pick your floor and settle in.

Atmosphere

High-energy and loud, with a young crowd that's there to dance. The multi-room format keeps things from feeling monotonous.

Music

Hip-hop and R&B on the ground floor, electronic and house on the second, Latin or pop on the third. Programming rotates by night.

Dress Code

Casual to smart casual. Jeans and sneakers are fine. Avoid athletic wear or you'll get stopped at the door.

Best For

Groups with mixed music preferences, weekend dancers, anyone wanting options without venue-hopping in the cold

Payment

Cards and debit accepted at all bars. Cash works but isn't required.

Price Range

Beer CAD 8-10, cocktails CAD 13-16, shots CAD 7-9, cover CAD 10-15 on weekends

Beer ~$6-7/~5.50-7 EUR, cocktails ~$9.50-12/~9-11 EUR

Hours

22:00-03:00 Thu-Sat, closed Sun-Wed

Insider Tip

The top floor is the least crowded and has the shortest bar wait. Get there before 11 PM on Saturdays to skip the line. Coat check fills up fast in winter, so arrive early or use the one on the second floor.

Full Review

Tokyo Bar works because of its format. Three rooms, three genres, one cover charge. On a Saturday night when it's minus 20 outside, not having to walk between venues is worth the price of admission alone.

The ground floor is the loudest and most packed. Hip-hop and R&B draw the biggest crowd, and the dance floor fills by 11:30 PM. The bar stretches along one wall and handles volume reasonably well, though you'll wait a few minutes during peak hours. The sound system is solid for a venue this size, with bass you can feel in your chest without the distortion that plagues cheaper setups.

The second floor is where the electronic music crowd lands. House and techno on rotating bills, with local DJs most weekends and occasional guest bookings. The vibe up here is slightly older and more focused on the music. The dance floor is smaller but less chaotic. This is the floor that gets the most congested on the stairs, so plan your movements accordingly.

The top floor rotates between Latin nights and pop-driven parties. It's the least crowded of the three and has the fastest bar service. Groups often start here, get drinks without a wait, and then move down. The view from the upper windows isn't spectacular, but you get a sense of the Saint-Laurent scene below.

The main drawback is that the multi-room format means none of the individual spaces feel like a destination on their own. Each floor is good but not great, which is the trade-off for variety under one roof.

The Neighborhood

Sits in the heart of the Saint-Laurent nightlife strip between Sherbrooke and Prince-Arthur. Surrounded by other bars and late-night food options. Depanneurs on nearby corners for cheaper pre-game drinks.
