Bascarsija, Sarajevo

Cajdzinica Dzirlo on Kovaci street is primarily a traditional Bosnian tea and coffee house that shifts into a relaxed bar as evening progresses. The courtyard is the main attraction: grapevines stretch overhead, creating a natural canopy above wooden tables where guests drink Bosnian coffee from copper dzezvas or choose from a menu of herbal teas that includes some unusual Bosnian blends. The interior rooms feature low seating, kilim rugs, and copper decorative pieces that feel authentic rather than staged. As a daytime venue, it's one of the most photographed cafes in Sarajevo. After dark, the atmosphere softens into something more intimate, with candles replacing daylight and the tea menu giving way to rakija and beer for those who want them. The staff is known for patience and hospitality, taking time to explain the coffee preparation ritual to newcomers.

What to Expect

A quiet courtyard under grapevines where the pace of the city disappears. Copper coffee pots catch the light, and the scent of brewing coffee mixes with whatever's blooming in the planters. Evening brings candles and a shift from caffeine to alcohol.

Atmosphere

Serene, traditional, and genuinely atmospheric. The antidote to loud bars.

Music

No amplified music. Ambient sounds of the courtyard and conversation only.

Dress Code

Casual. This is a tea house that happens to serve alcohol in the evening.

Full Review

Cajdzinica Dzirlo represents the quieter side of Bascarsija's evening offerings. This isn't a bar in the conventional sense. It's a traditional Bosnian tea and coffee house that stays open late enough to serve as a calm counterpoint to the livelier venues on surrounding streets.

The courtyard is the experience. On a warm evening, sitting under the grapevines with a copper dzezva of Bosnian coffee, the old town's noise fades to a background murmur. The preparation ritual matters here. The coffee comes in a small copper pot, and you pour it yourself into the fildzan (cup), letting the grounds settle. Sugar is provided as a cube that you hold between your teeth while sipping. It's meditative, deliberate, and connects you to something older than the tourist economy.

As evening deepens, some guests switch from coffee to rakija, and the atmosphere adjusts accordingly. Conversations grow longer and more personal. The staff doesn't rush anyone. You could spend three hours here on a single coffee and receive nothing but refills of water and genuine hospitality.

This venue suits a specific mood. If you want energy, music, and dancing, look elsewhere. If you want an evening that feels rooted in place and tradition, this courtyard delivers something that the trendier bars on Ferhadija cannot replicate. It closes earlier than the bars (usually by midnight), making it ideal for the first stop of an evening rather than the last.

The Neighborhood

Kovaci street runs through the eastern part of Bascarsija, near the old town's residential areas. The street also holds several traditional craft shops and the Kovaci cemetery, where Bosnian war dead are buried.

Getting There

From Sebilj fountain, walk east along the main bazaar streets toward Kovaci. The cafe is on the right side, identifiable by the grapevine-covered courtyard visible through the entrance gate. About a 5-minute walk from the center of Bascarsija.
