The Pickled Onion tries to be two things at once, and mostly succeeds at both. The ground-floor restaurant is a proper dinner venue with table linens, attentive service, and a menu that justifies the prices. The fish chowder is excellent, served with the traditional sherry peppers and rum. Steaks are imported and cooked well. Pasta dishes round out the options for those not in the mood for seafood or red meat.
Upstairs, the tone changes. The bar level has indoor seating with a more casual feel. There's a pool table on some nights and the drinks menu shifts toward simpler cocktails and cold beer. This level serves as a transition zone between the restaurant's refinement and the rooftop's energy.
The rooftop is the reason people talk about the Pickled Onion. The terrace wraps around the building with views north across the harbour and east along Front Street. On a clear evening, you can see the lights of the Royal Naval Dockyard in the distance. The bar is well-staffed on weekends, though waits of 5-10 minutes happen during peak hours.
Live bands set up on a small stage at one end of the rooftop. The quality varies. Some nights you get a tight covers band that has the whole terrace dancing.
