Sandbar Beachfront Hostel & Bar
Sandbar combines a hostel with a beach bar right on the waterfront of Barrier Reef Drive. The bar area features sand floors, hammocks strung between posts, string lights, and a bar counter made from reclaimed wood. It sits directly on the water, with the Belize Barrier Reef visible on the horizon. Capacity fluctuates based on how many hammocks and chairs get dragged out, but figure 60-80 people on a busy night. The crowd is predominantly budget travelers in their twenties, along with dive shop staff and seasonal workers. Events rotate: beer pong on some nights, live acoustic music on others, trivia occasionally. Belikin and rum are the staples, served cheap and strong.
What to Expect
Feet in the sand, hammock optional, beer in hand, reef on the horizon. The vibe is backpacker social: people are friendly, conversations happen easily, and nobody's pretending to be anything other than a tourist on a budget enjoying the Caribbean.
Barefoot, social, and sun-bleached. The hostel crowd sets the tone: friendly and open.
Reggae, acoustic covers, and island vibes. Live acoustic performers play some evenings.
Swimwear with a cover-up is fine. This is the most casual venue in San Pedro.
Solo travelers, backpackers, and budget-conscious visitors who want the most social bar on the strip.
Cash (BZD or USD) preferred. Cards accepted with a minimum spend.

Full Review
Sandbar is where San Pedro's budget travelers congregate, and the setup makes it obvious why. Sand floors, hammocks, string lights, and the Caribbean Sea right there, steps from your chair. The bar is simple: a wooden counter staffed by bartenders who know every backpacker's name within two visits. Belikin flows cheap, and the rum drinks are mixed strong enough that two will get you started.
The social dynamic is the real product. Solo travelers end up in group conversations within minutes. The hostel guests already know each other from dorm-room introductions, and they naturally absorb bar visitors into their circle. Beer pong nights are competitive in a friendly way. Live acoustic music, when it happens, creates a campfire kind of atmosphere.
The waterfront location adds genuine value. Sunset from a Sandbar hammock, with a BZD 4 happy hour Belikin, is one of the best deals in the Caribbean. The reef is visible on the horizon, and the water is clear enough to watch fish from the edge of the bar.
Compared to Wahoo's, Sandbar is younger and more tourist-oriented. Compared to Palapa Bar, it's cheaper and more social. It fills a clear niche: the place where twenty-somethings with dive tans and salt-crusted hair gather to compare reef stories and plan tomorrow's adventure.
The Neighborhood
On the waterfront side of Barrier Reef Drive, within a short walk of Wahoo's Lounge and other San Pedro bars. The hostel upstairs offers dorm beds for budget travelers. Dive shops and restaurants are steps away.
Getting There
Central Barrier Reef Drive location. Walking distance from everything in downtown San Pedro.
Other Venues in Barrier Reef Drive

Wahoo's Lounge
San Pedro's most iconic bar, famous for the Wednesday night Chicken Drop where patrons bet on where a chicken will leave a dropping on a numbered board. Cold Belikin on tap, a covered open-air layout, and a crowd mixing tourists and locals.

Jaguar's Temple Club
San Pedro's only proper nightclub with a dance floor, DJ booth, and late-night hours on weekends. Plays a mix of reggaeton, dancehall, soca, and Top 40. The closest thing to a club experience on the island.

Palapa Bar & Grill
Overwater bar built on a dock with seating right above the Caribbean. Known for rum punch, inner tube floating, and a relaxed daytime scene that carries into evening. A San Pedro institution.

Wine de Vine
Small wine and cocktail bar on Barrier Reef Drive offering something different from the beer-and-rum norm. Good wine list, craft cocktails, and a quieter atmosphere for conversation. Popular with couples and the expat crowd.
