Palapa Bar & Grill
Palapa Bar & Grill extends over the Caribbean Sea on a wooden dock, with a thatched palapa roof providing shade over the bar area. The signature experience is inner tube floating: grab a tube, float in the clear water, and order drinks from the swim-up bar. The dock seats about 40 people at tables, with room for more in the water on tubes. The bar is known for rum punch, served strong and fruity in large plastic cups. The food menu covers seafood, burgers, and bar food, with fresh catch specials depending on what the fishermen brought in. During the day, it's a social hub for tourists. By evening, the energy softens into a sunset crowd with drinks and appetizers. It's not a late-night venue, typically closing by 9-10 PM, but it's San Pedro's most iconic bar experience.

Full Review
Palapa Bar earns its reputation as San Pedro's signature venue through a concept so simple it's genius: put a bar over the water and let people float in inner tubes while drinking. The execution matches the idea. A wooden dock extends from shore, with a thatched-roof bar at the end. Steps lead down into the Caribbean, where inner tubes wait for anyone who's bought a drink.
The water is shin-deep near the dock and deeper further out, clear enough to see fish and the sandy bottom. Floating with a rum punch while the barrier reef breaks waves on the horizon is one of those Caribbean experiences that actually lives up to the postcard version. The swim-up bar window handles orders for people in the water, so you don't have to abandon your tube.
The food is better than it needs to be. Fresh ceviche made with whatever came off the boats that morning is the highlight. Fish tacos are reliable. The bar menu is rum-forward, with the house rum punch being the default order for good reason.
Palapa Bar closes early by nightlife standards, usually by 9 PM. It's a daytime and sunset venue, not a late-night one. That's fine; it does what it does perfectly. The lunch rush between noon and 2 PM brings the biggest crowds. For a more relaxed experience, arrive around 3 PM when the lunch crowd leaves and the sunset crowd hasn't arrived yet.
