The Emerson
The Emerson is an upscale rooftop bar and club venue at the South Yarra end of Chapel Street, occupying the upper levels of a building with views across Melbourne's southern suburbs. The ground floor is a bar and restaurant. The main draw is the rooftop, which operates as a cocktail bar by day and a club space by night on weekends. During summer, the rooftop is one of Melbourne's most popular outdoor drinking spots, filling by mid-afternoon on Saturdays. Cocktails are AUD 22-30, wine AUD 16-24, and beer AUD 14-18. Club nights charge AUD 20-40 entry. Bottle service runs AUD 500-800. The crowd is South Yarra's local demographic: young professionals, fashion-conscious, and willing to spend.
What to Expect
A polished, upmarket venue where the view and the cocktails are the main attraction during daylight hours, and the energy shifts to club mode after dark on weekends. The crowd is well-dressed and the prices reflect the South Yarra postcode. This is Melbourne at its most aspirational.
Polished and aspirational during the day. By night on weekends, the energy picks up and the rooftop transitions into a dance space. The view and the cocktails are consistent highlights.
Deep house, nu-disco, and lounge during the day. Commercial house and dance at night.
Strictly enforced. Smart dress required. Men need collared shirts or high-quality knitwear, dress shoes, and no sneakers. Women dress to impress. The door team will redirect you if you don't meet the standard.
Couples, date nights, and groups who want Melbourne's upscale rooftop experience. People who don't mind paying premium prices for a premium setting.
Cards and contactless only. Most transactions are cashless.

Full Review
The Emerson delivers on its upscale promise. The rooftop space is genuinely impressive, with enough room for maybe 200 people across lounge seating, standing areas, and a bar that runs along one edge. The views look south and east across Melbourne's suburbs, and on a clear summer day, this is one of the better places to have a drink in the city.
The cocktail list is curated and well-executed. Bartenders know what they're doing, and the AUD 22-30 price point delivers drinks that match the setting. The wine list focuses on Australian producers with a few imports. Beer selection is adequate but this isn't a beer venue.
The transition to club mode on weekend nights changes the rooftop's character. The furniture gets rearranged, a DJ takes over, and the crowd shifts from afternoon drinks to nightclub energy. The sound system handles this transition well, though it doesn't match the power of purpose-built clubs like Love Machine.
The ground floor bar and restaurant are solid if unspectacular. The food is modern Australian with prices matching the South Yarra location (mains AUD 30-45). It works as a pre-drinks dinner option.
The door policy is the biggest barrier. The Emerson explicitly targets an upscale crowd and the security team filters accordingly. Groups of men without a booking or a guest list entry may struggle. Booking a table or joining the online guest list smooths this process considerably.
Service is attentive, especially for bottle service tables. Regular bar patrons may wait longer during peak hours. Bathrooms are modern and clean.
The Neighborhood
The South Yarra end of Chapel Street transitions into Toorak Road, one of Melbourne's wealthiest shopping strips. Surrounding restaurants and wine bars cater to the same upmarket demographic. Como House and the Royal Botanic Gardens are nearby for daytime activities.
Getting There
South Yarra station (multiple lines) is a 5-minute walk. Tram 8 runs along Toorak Road nearby. Rideshare drop-off on Chapel Street works fine during the day but can be congested on weekend nights.
