Greville Street venues
Greville Street is a short lane running off Chapel Street in Prahran that clusters several small bars and a live music venue within a single block. During the day it's a boutique shopping strip with vintage stores and record shops. At night, the bars come alive. The anchor venues include a live music space that books local bands most nights, a wine bar, and a couple of small cocktail spots. The appeal is the walkability: you can try three or four venues in an evening without crossing a main road. Drinks are priced at the mid-range for the area: beers AUD 10-14, cocktails AUD 18-24, wine AUD 13-19. Entry is free at most bars; the live music venue charges AUD 10-25 depending on the act.

Full Review
Greville Street works because of its scale. The entire strip is maybe 200 metres long, with four or five venues of note clustered in the middle. This density means you can arrive at one end, visit everything, and end up back on Chapel Street having had a complete evening out.
The live music venue is the standout. It's small, maybe 150 capacity, with a stage at one end and a bar at the other. The sound is clean for the room and the booking policy favours local bands playing original music. Cover charges are low, usually AUD 10-15, and the crowd at most gigs is genuinely there for the music. On any given Thursday or Friday night, you might catch the next Australian band before they sell out bigger rooms.
The wine bar a few doors down serves natural wines and small plates in a room that feels like someone's living room. Prices are fair and the staff know their list. It's a good place to start before the music starts next door.
The cocktail spots are small and personality-driven. Each has maybe 30-40 seats and a bartender who takes pride in the work. Don't expect extensive menus; the strength is in execution rather than range.
Bathrooms across the street are small venue bathrooms: functional, not luxurious. Security is informal; these are small bars, not nightclubs.
The daytime character of Greville Street adds context. The vintage clothing stores, the record shops, and the independent boutiques set a tone that the evening venues continue. It's one of the few Melbourne nightlife pockets where the day and night identities are genuinely connected.
