Vietnam's 90-day multiple-entry e-visa launched in August 2023, replacing the previous 30-day single-entry version. Vietnam Visa Policy Overview 2026
Vietnam has made significant visa improvements over 2023-2025. The headline change: the 90-day multiple-entry e-visa launched in August 2023, replacing the previous 30-day single-entry version. The visa-exemption program for 13 European nationalities was extended through 2028 in August 2025. The combination makes Vietnam the most visa-accessible major Southeast Asian destination for European tourists.
The 90-Day E-Visa
The Vietnam e-visa allows a 90-day stay (single or multiple-entry) for nationals of 80+ countries. Single-entry USD 25, multiple-entry USD 50. Apply at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn (the official Vietnam Immigration portal) with a passport scan, recent photo, intended entry/exit dates, and intended port of entry. Processing 3-5 business days. The visa is electronic; print and present at immigration on arrival.
The e-visa is the standard option for non-exempt nationalities (US, Canada, Australia, most Asian non-ASEAN, most Middle Eastern). It's also useful for exempt-nationality travelers who need longer than the exemption period or who want to enter Vietnam multiple times.
Visa Exemption (Free, for 24 Nationalities)
Vietnam offers visa-free entry to 24 nationalities, with the period varying:
- 45 days: UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia (extended through 2028 in August 2025)
- 30 days: Chile, Phillipines
- 15 days: Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Belarus
- 30 days: ASEAN nationals (Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Brunei)
UK and major EU citizens have effectively had the visa requirement eliminated for most tourist trips. The exemption is non-extendable; if you need longer, get an e-visa.
E-Visa Application Practical Notes
The official portal at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn is the authoritative source. Avoid the dozens of unofficial commercial sites (vietnam-visa.com, ivisa.com, etc.) that charge USD 50-150 markups for the same process. The official site accepts most major credit cards in USD.
Application requirements: passport scan (entire information page), recent photo (4x6 cm against white background), intended entry and exit dates, intended port of entry (any major airport or land border), basic personal information. The system runs on a 3-5 business day processing window; rush processing is not available.
Extending or Restarting Your Visa
The 90-day e-visa is non-extendable; you must exit and re-enter or apply for a new e-visa. Many travelers do a short trip to Cambodia (Siem Reap or Phnom Penh by bus or short flight) or Laos to reset their 90-day window. Each new e-visa application requires submitting fresh documents and a new USD 25 or USD 50 fee.
For longer continuous stays, the Tourist Visa (DL) through a Vietnamese embassy before arrival is the alternative. Business visas (sponsored by a Vietnamese company) and Long-Term Resident Cards are the options for stays beyond 6 months.
