UK Visa Overview 2026

The UK launched its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for non-visa-required nationalities in 2024, expanding through 2025. By 2026, the ETA is required for entry by all non-visa nationals from previously visa-free countries (US, EU, Australia, etc.).

UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

GBP 16 per application. Valid for 2 years. Apply at gov.uk/apply-eta. Processing usually minutes; allow up to 72 hours for some applications. Mandatory for all non-visa nationalities for entry to the UK.

The ETA expanded in phases through 2024-2025:

  • Late 2023: Initial rollout for Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan
  • 2024: Expansion to additional Middle Eastern and select non-EU nationalities
  • Late 2024/early 2025: Expansion to US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and most other VWP-equivalent nationalities
  • By late 2025: Full rollout to all EU member states (except Ireland)

Required information: passport details, employment, intended UK address, eligibility questions. Approval is the standard outcome for travelers without red flags.

Once approved, the ETA allows multiple entries to the UK for up to 6 months per visit, valid for 2 years (or until passport expiry). The ETA itself is electronic; no document to print, just confirmation by the immigration system on arrival.

Standard Visitor Visa

For nationalities not eligible for the ETA (China, India, most African nations, most Middle Eastern non-GCC, Russia, and others), the Standard Visitor Visa is required. GBP 115 single-entry. Up to 6 months per visit. Apply at gov.uk/standard-visitor-visa.

Required: application form, biometric data, financial proof (typically GBP 1,000+ per month of stay), travel plans (flight bookings, accommodation), ties to home country. Multi-entry options also available: 2-year (GBP 432), 5-year (GBP 786), 10-year (GBP 1,059).

Skilled Worker Visa

For employment in the UK. UK employer sponsor (Tier 2 license required), occupation on the eligible occupation list, minimum salary GBP 38,700/year (the threshold raised significantly from GBP 26,200 in April 2024). GBP 719-1,500 application fee depending on visa duration.

Up to 5 years initial visa with extensions. Path to indefinite leave to remain after 5 years of qualified residency. The Health and Care Worker exemption applies for medical professionals with reduced salary threshold (GBP 23,200).

Working on a Visitor Visa

Visitor visas (ETA or Standard) explicitly prohibit work, with limited exceptions for permitted business activities (attending meetings, conferences, training; not actual paid work). Remote work for foreign employers while in the UK occupies a gray zone but is generally tolerated for short trips.

For formal employment, the Skilled Worker Visa is the standard path. The UK has no specific digital nomad visa as of 2026; the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa and Global Talent visa are alternative paths for specific qualified individuals.

Practical Notes

The UK Home Office site is gov.uk/government/organisations/home-office. The ETA portal is gov.uk/apply-eta. Avoid commercial sites that charge markups for the same applications.

The UK tax-residency rules apply to anyone in the UK 183+ days per year. The High Potential Individual visa (launched 2022) covers graduates from top universities and provides 2-3 years of unsponsored UK residency. The Global Talent visa covers exceptional contributors in research, technology, arts, or sport.
