The K-ETA exemption for 22 nationalities (including US, UK, Australia, Japan) was extended through end of December 2025 but expected to resume requiring K-ETA from January 2026. Korea launched its Digital Nomad Visa (F-1-D) in January 2024 for high-earning remote workers.

South Korea Visa Overview 2026

South Korea maintains its 90-day visa-free entry for nationals of 60+ countries, with the K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) as the only major requirement. The K-ETA at KRW 10,000 (USD 8) is the practical Korea visa fee for most tourists. The Digital Nomad Visa F-1-D launched January 2024 for high-earning remote workers who need longer than 90 days.

K-ETA: The Required Pre-Travel Authorization

K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) has been in place since 2021. KRW 10,000 (around USD 8) per traveler. Apply online at k-eta.go.kr at least 24-72 hours before your flight. Valid for 3 years or until passport expiry, whichever is earlier. The application requires passport scan, recent photo, travel dates, and basic personal information.

K-ETA is required for visa-free entry; arriving without K-ETA results in a boarding denial at your departure airport. The Korean immigration authority shares K-ETA approval status with departure-airport airline staff who refuse boarding without valid K-ETA.

K-ETA Exemption Status

Through end of December 2025, 22 nationalities had a temporary K-ETA exemption: US, UK, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Italy, Germany, France, Canada, New Zealand, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and several others. The exemption was a 2023-2025 measure during Korea's post-pandemic tourism push. The exemption is expected to expire end of 2025 and K-ETA will resume requirement from January 2026 for all visa-free nationalities.

Always check the current K-ETA status at k-eta.go.kr/portal/apply/index.do before planning your trip. The official portal lists current exemption status and processing times.

The 90-Day Visa-Free Entry

Citizens of 60+ countries can enter Korea visa-free for 90 days. Free (the K-ETA is separate). Requirements: valid passport, K-ETA approval (when not exempt), return ticket. The 90-day window is not extendable from inside Korea; you must leave and reapply for visa-free re-entry after a reasonable gap.

Digital Nomad Visa F-1-D

Launched January 2024 for high-earning remote workers. A 1-year visa (extendable to 2 years) requiring USD 65,000+ annual income from a foreign employer, foreign employer or business registration, private health insurance covering Korea. USD 80 application fee. Apply at any Korean embassy. Processing 30-60 days.

The visa allows multiple-entry and includes spouse and minor children as accompanying visa holders. Designed for travelers who want longer than the 90-day visa-free window. Working for Korean employers is prohibited under this visa; the income must come from foreign sources.

Practical Notes

The Korea Ministry of Justice immigration site is hikorea.go.kr; the K-ETA portal is k-eta.go.kr. Avoid unofficial commercial sites that charge markup on the K-ETA fee. Korean immigration officers are professional and efficient; the 90-day stamp is granted automatically without questioning at Incheon and Gimpo airports. Land-border arrivals from China are limited and require visa pre-arrangement.
