Peru Visa Overview 2026

Peru maintains 90-day visa-free entry for citizens of most Western and major Latin American countries. The Rentista residency is the standard long-term path. Peru does not have a specific digital nomad visa as of 2026.

The 90-Day Visa-Free Entry

Citizens of 80+ countries (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, all major Latin American nations) can enter Peru visa-free for 90 days. Free. Some travelers receive only 60 days on initial entry; specifically request 90 days at immigration.

Extension to 183 Days

The 90-day visa-free entry can be extended for 90 more days at any Migraciones office in Peru, for a maximum total stay of 183 days per calendar year. The Lima Migraciones office (Av. España 730, Lima) and the Cusco Migraciones office are the most-used. Cost PEN 50-80 (around USD 15-22). Processing same-day to 5 days. The 183-day cap is per calendar year; after that, you must exit Peru.

Rentista Visa (Passive Income Residency)

Peru's standard long-term residency for non-employed foreigners. USD 1,000/month passive income (investments, rental income, dividends, pension). USD 200+ application fee. 1-year initial visa renewable indefinitely. After 2 years, eligible for permanent residency. After 5 years on residency, eligible for Peruvian citizenship.

The Rentista is the standard path for retirees, remote workers wanting longer than 183 days, and others with passive income who want Peruvian residency. Apply at the Peruvian consulate in your country of citizenship or in-country at the Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones. Processing 6-12 months (Peru's residency bureaucracy is slow).

Resident Investor Visa

USD 500+ application fee. Indefinite residency. Requirements: USD 500,000+ investment in a Peruvian business or real estate. After 2 years, eligible for permanent residency. After 5 years, citizenship.

Practical Notes

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs site is rree.gob.pe. The Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones site is migraciones.gob.pe. Most Peruvian consulates handle Rentista applications; the consulate in your country of citizenship is the standard application point.

Peru tax-residency rules apply to anyone in Peru 183+ days per year. The Lima expat scene concentrates in Miraflores and Barranco; cost of living is among the cheapest in Latin America. The Peruvian sol has weakened against the US dollar in 2024-2025, making Peru particularly affordable for USD-earning remote workers.
