Practical box
- Transport
- Mykonos is closed-island in winter. Most local buses don't run; rental cars or hotel transfers are the only options. The ferry from Athens runs reduced schedule (one daily in winter).
- Costs
- Open hotels EUR 280-950 per night, around 30 percent of summer peak rates. Restaurant NYE prix-fixe EUR 55-145. The cheapest Mykonos accommodation of the year.
- Safety on the night
- Mykonos is genuinely safe. Pickpocketing is non-existent (population too small). The risk is logistical: the limited number of open venues, the reduced ferry schedule, the closed shops.
- Dress
- Cold (8 to 13°C, with wind from the Aegean making it feel colder). Coat. Most venues are casual; the luxury hotel galas smart casual.
- Ticketing
- Hotel galas directly through the hotel. Restaurant menus by phone.

Mykonos in Winter: Mostly Closed
Mykonos is functionally a closed island from late October to mid-April. Around 90 percent of restaurants, bars, clubs, and hotels close for winter; the famous summer venues (Cavo Paradiso, Scorpios, Nammos Mykonos, Astra) are shut. The international tourist contingent is sub-1,000 in winter versus the 100,000+ at any given moment in August. What stays open serves the permanent Greek population of around 10,000.
For travelers who want the cinematic Mykonos club NYE, this is not the destination. The famous summer parties happen in July and August, not December. For travelers who want a quiet, contemplative NYE in a postcard-pretty Cycladic location with a few luxury hotel options and authentic Greek local restaurants, Mykonos in winter delivers.
The Open Hotels
A handful of luxury hotels stay open through winter: Cavo Tagoo (the cliff-side white-and-blue cinematic Mykonos hotel), Bill & Coo Suites, Belvedere Hotel, Mykonos Theoxenia, and a few smaller boutique properties. They run NYE galas as all-inclusive packages: multi-course dinner, premium open bar, accommodation. EUR 850 to EUR 2,200 per couple including room for the gala-and-stay package. Hotel rates without the gala EUR 280 to EUR 950 per night, around 30 percent of summer peak rates.
Chora Restaurants
Around 15 to 20 restaurants in Chora (Mykonos Town) stay open year-round. Niko's Taverna (the family-run institution), Kounelas (fish taverna by Little Venice), Tasos Taverna (traditional Cycladic), Eva's Garden, and Catari run NYE prix-fixe menus at EUR 55 to EUR 145 per person. The format is multi-course Greek dinner with vasilopita at midnight and sparkling wine. Book by mid-December.
Old Port Fireworks
A small local NYE fireworks display fires from the Old Port at midnight. Free public viewing from the harbor promenade. The crowd is around 1,500 to 3,000 attendees, almost entirely Greek locals. The Chora waterfront, Little Venice's seafront, and the windmills offer scenic viewing.
Practical Mykonos NYE Numbers
Hotels EUR 280 to EUR 950 per night for December 31, around 30 percent of summer peak rates (Cavo Tagoo in August runs EUR 1,800 to EUR 4,500 per night; in winter EUR 350 to EUR 750). The luxury gala packages EUR 850 to EUR 2,200 per couple. Apartments via Airbnb EUR 65 to EUR 150. Book by mid-November. Direct flights from Athens twice daily on Aegean and Sky Express; the winter ferry schedule (one daily from Piraeus, 4-5 hours) is less reliable. Mykonos is closed-island in winter; rental cars or hotel transfers are the only ground transit. December overnight temperatures at 8 to 13°C with Aegean wind making it feel colder; coat mandatory.
