Practical box
- Transport
- Metro closes at 23:00 on December 31. Use Uber or Didi; surge pricing 2x to 4x. Most upscale neighborhoods (Polanco, Roma, Condesa) are walkable within themselves. The Centro Histórico requires Uber after the metro closes.
- Costs
- Hotels in Polanco MXN 4,500-15,000 per night. Roma Norte and Condesa MXN 2,800-7,500. Club covers MXN 900-3,500. Beer at a cantina MXN 60-120. Restaurant NYE menu MXN 1,200-4,500.
- Safety on the night
- Centro Histórico crowds attract pickpockets; phone in front zipped pocket. Avoid the Doctores, Tepito, and Iztapalapa areas. Late-night taxi scams are real; only use Uber or Didi, never street taxis. The Polanco-Roma-Condesa triangle is genuinely safe.
- Dress
- Mexico City's December overnight at 6 to 10°C; layered, with a coat. Smart casual for clubs; Polanco enforces a stricter dress code than Roma Norte.
- Ticketing
- Club tables via WhatsApp directly with the venue. Restaurant NYE menus via OpenTable or directly. Hotel rooftop packages via the hotel concierge.

Mexico City's NYE Format
Mexico City's New Year's Eve runs on a late schedule. The Mexican tradition is a long family dinner (la cena de fin de año) from around 21:00 to 23:30, midnight grapes (the 12 grapes for 12 wishes), and then heading out to clubs around 01:00 to 02:00. Almost nothing happens at clubs before midnight. The peak hour is 03:00 to 05:00, with many clubs running until 06:00.
The Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución) hosts the free public event for the Centro Histórico's symbolic NYE. Around 80,000 to 150,000 people fill the plaza for live music from the kiosk stage from 21:00, midnight fireworks from the Cathedral facade, and the symbolic countdown. The crowd skews Mexican families with teenagers. Heavy police presence; the plaza itself is safe but the surrounding streets after 02:00 are not.
The Reforma fireworks at midnight from Paseo de la Reforma are the main visual spectacle. Best free viewing from the Angel de la Independencia roundabout, the Sears Reforma public terrace, or any rooftop along the avenue. The Torre Mayor and the Reforma 222 building have free observation decks open until 01:00.
Polanco and Roma Norte Clubs
Polanco concentrates the high-end clubs: Joy, Patrick Miller (the long-running synth-pop institution), Hyde Polanco, Mooness, the rooftop Bar 503 at the Pug Seal Hotel. Covers MXN 900 to MXN 3,500 with one drink; tables MXN 18,000 to MXN 45,000 for four with bottles. Strict door codes; smart casual mandatory, no shorts, no flip-flops, no athletic wear.
Roma Norte is the trendier, more eclectic alternative. Mama Rumba (salsa), Departamento (electronic), Departamento Foro, El Imperial (jazz fusion), and the rooftop at El Patio 77 run NYE packages MXN 600 to MXN 2,200. The Roma Norte crowd skews younger and more international; door codes more relaxed.
Condesa is the bar-heavy middle ground. Felina, Marrakech, Pata Negra, and a half-dozen cantinas around Avenida Amsterdam stay packed from 22:00 to 04:00. No covers but mandatory drink minimums.
