Overview and Location

My Khe Beach runs along the east coast of Da Nang for about 10 kilometers, from the Son Tra peninsula in the north down to the Marble Mountains in the south. The nightlife strip sits along Vo Nguyen Giap Street, the road that hugs the beach for the entire length. The central tourist section spans roughly four kilometers, with the densest concentration of bars and clubs between the Han River Bridge and the Tran Thi Ly Bridge.

The beach itself was renamed by US troops during the Vietnam War, when they called it China Beach and turned it into a recreation zone for service members. The name stuck in Western travel guides for decades. Locals always called it My Khe, and the current name has reclaimed that history. The sand is wide, white, and clean, with calm waters in the dry season and stronger currents during the wet months.

Vo Nguyen Giap Street is a wide four-lane boulevard running parallel to the beach. The west side holds the hotels, restaurants, and most of the beach bars. The east side, between the road and the sand, has the beach club terraces, the sun loungers, and the direct beachfront seating. Crossing the road requires care; the traffic is heavy and constant.

Legal Status

Vietnam's national prohibition on prostitution applies on My Khe as everywhere else in the country. Enforcement targets organizers more aggressively than individual workers or clients. Police presence on Vo Nguyen Giap is moderate, with patrol cars visible during the evening and overnight hours. The beach itself is patrolled by lifeguards during the day and by security from the larger hotels at night.

The major beach bars (Esco, Maia, Kala Kala, Paradise, Lounge) are licensed entertainment businesses that focus on drinks, food, and music. They are not pickup spots in any meaningful sense. The crowds are mixed tourist groups, couples, and small groups of friends rather than singles-oriented venues.

A few of the massage parlors along Vo Nguyen Giap and the smaller side streets running inland from the beach offer services that extend beyond therapeutic massage. These businesses operate in the gray zone that's common across Vietnam: licensed for massage, but with informal upselling once clients are inside. The same advice applies as elsewhere: confirm scope and price in writing first, and walk out if pressure tactics begin.

Korean and Chinese-oriented KTV venues are scattered through the central beach area, particularly on streets running inland from My Khe. Some operate as standard family singing rooms. Others include hostess services. The latter target Korean and Chinese male visitors specifically, and the bill structures are aggressive. Foreigners who don't speak Vietnamese should approach the KTV scene cautiously.

Costs and Pricing

My Khe sits between An Thuong and Bach Dang on pricing, with beachfront venues commanding premiums for the location. The numbers below reflect current prices in early to mid 2026.

Beer

Local beer at beach bars runs 35,000 to 60,000 VND ($1.40-2.40). The cheaper end is at Lounge Beach Bar and Paradise. Esco, Maia, and Kala Kala charge closer to the upper end of that range. Imported beer (Heineken, Corona, Asahi) runs 80,000 to 150,000 VND ($3.20-6.00) across the strip.

Craft beer at East West Brewing costs 90,000 to 160,000 VND per pint, depending on the style. The taproom carries five to seven rotating taps.

Cocktails

Standard cocktails at the beach bars cost 150,000 to 280,000 VND ($6-11.20). Signature drinks at Esco, Maia, and the more upscale venues run 200,000 to 350,000 VND ($8-14). The classic mojito, gin and tonic, or margarita sits at the lower end.

Kala Kala's cocktail menu is the most curated of the beach club options, with prices reflecting that. Expect 250,000 to 400,000 VND for signature drinks during weekend party nights.

Bottle Service

Maia and Kala Kala offer bottle packages starting around 3 million VND ($120) for mid-tier spirits with mixers. Premium bottles climb to 8 million VND ($320). Bottle service is more common at Kala Kala on weekend nights when the club programming brings visiting DJs.

Entry

Most beach bars don't charge cover. Kala Kala charges 100,000 to 200,000 VND ($4-8) on weekend nights with visiting DJs, sometimes including a drink. Special events and themed parties at Esco or Maia may include entry tickets sold in advance.

Food

Beach bar food ranges from light bites at 100,000 to 200,000 VND ($4-8) to full main courses at 250,000 to 500,000 VND ($10-20). Seafood platters and grilled meat plates at Esco and Maia sit at the higher end. East West Brewing's food menu is more developed with burgers, pizzas, and shared plates between 200,000 and 400,000 VND.

Sample Evening

A relaxed evening at Esco or Maia with two cocktails, a beer, and a shared snack plate runs 600,000 to 900,000 VND ($24-36) per person. A bigger night with multiple drinks and dinner pushes the total to 1.2 to 2 million VND ($48-80) per person. Kala Kala on a weekend party night with bottle service and a small group can easily exceed 4 million VND ($160) per person.

Street-Level Detail

Vo Nguyen Giap is a long boulevard that changes character as you move along it. The northern section, near the Han River Bridge, has fewer venues and more hotels. The central section between the Tran Thi Ly Bridge and the road south to Marble Mountains is where the beach bar strip concentrates. The southern end, near Non Nuoc, has more residential development and fewer bars.

Esco Beach Bar at Lot 12 is the established anchor. The venue sprawls across an open beachfront site with multiple terraces, indoor lounges, and direct sand access. The food program is the most developed on the strip, with international cuisine and a strong cocktail list. Weekend evenings include fire dance performances on the sand.

Maia Beach Bar at 284 Vo Nguyen Giap occupies a slightly more polished space. The decor leans modern and clean, with sun loungers spilling onto the sand and a covered deck for evening service. The cocktail tower presentations are part of Maia's signature, with three-liter cocktail vessels delivered to tables for sharing. DJ sets typically start at sunset and run until midnight or 1 AM.

Kala Kala Beach Club at the southern end is the most club-oriented venue on My Khe. The outdoor DJ booth is the focal point, with a sound system that pushes Afro House and Deep House across the beach. The crowd is younger and the energy is closer to a dance club than a beach bar. Weekend nights bring visiting DJs from Saigon and abroad.

Paradise Beach Bar at 270 Vo Nguyen Giap has the outdoor cinema concept, screening films on weekend nights against the backdrop of the beach. The vibe is more casual and family-friendly during early evening hours, shifting toward a younger crowd after the films end.

Lounge Beach Bar at 1C is the budget-friendly option, with sun loungers, drink service, and a relaxed atmosphere that draws backpackers and longer-term visitors. The crowd is more international and less Korean or Chinese than the larger neighboring venues.

Malibu Beach Club has the pool-and-bar layout, with daytime visitors using the swimming pool and loungers and the bar gradually filling through the evening. The venue covers a lot of ground but the energy is lower than the dedicated party venues.

East West Brewing's Da Nang location, just inland from the beach, offers a counterpoint to the beach club scene. The craft beer taproom has indoor seating, an oceanfront terrace, and a focus on food rather than party energy. It's where the slightly older crowd goes when they don't want EDM.

Across Vo Nguyen Giap from the beach, the west side of the road has more standard restaurants, ground-floor bars, and a handful of indoor clubs like Koto Club. The crossing distance is short but the traffic is constant. Use the crosswalks rather than darting between cars.

Safety

My Khe is mostly safe, with the standard caveats. The beach bars themselves are well-staffed, well-lit, and busy enough that opportunistic crime is uncommon. Violent incidents involving tourists are rare.

The risks split between roadside and beach-side. On Vo Nguyen Giap, motorbike phone snatching is a real and reported problem. Walking the street with a phone in hand or a loose bag is risky. Thieves on scooters approach from behind, grab, and accelerate away in seconds. Keep phones in zipped pockets and bags on the body side away from the road.

On the beach itself, the dark sections away from the venues are not safe to walk alone at night. The beach extends for kilometers in both directions, and the lighting drops off sharply once you move beyond the immediate bar zones. Swimming at night is dangerous regardless of safety; the currents during the wet season can pull strong swimmers out, and lifeguards aren't on duty after sunset.

Drink spiking has been reported at some of the larger beach clubs, particularly targeting Korean and Chinese male tourists drinking alone or in small groups. The pattern involves women approaching solo male visitors, drinks getting spiked, and wallets or phones disappearing. Stay with your group, watch what's being poured, and don't accept drinks from strangers.

Overcharging at My Khe beach bars happens occasionally but less aggressively than in KTV venues or the Hai Chau hostess clubs. The main beach bars have menus with displayed prices. The risk increases at smaller, less-established venues without visible menus or with handwritten prices that can change. Confirm pricing before ordering anywhere that doesn't have a clear menu.

Pickpocketing at crowded events (DIFF Fireworks Festival viewing nights, themed party events) is common. The throng around the popular beach clubs during peak hours creates conditions where wallets and phones in back pockets disappear easily.

The road itself is a real hazard. Vo Nguyen Giap traffic includes fast-moving cars, motorbikes, and the occasional larger vehicle. Don't try to cross outside the marked crosswalks, particularly at night when visibility is lower.

Cultural Context

My Khe was a fishing village before tourism transformed the coast. The shift began in the early 2000s as Vietnamese investors built the first beachfront hotels and the road infrastructure improved. By the 2010s, Da Nang's central coast was one of the country's fastest-growing tourist destinations.

Korean tourists make up the largest single foreign visitor group on My Khe. Korean Air operates direct flights to Da Nang from multiple Korean cities, and the Korean influence is visible throughout the beach strip: Korean restaurants, Korean-language signage at the major beach clubs, Korean tour groups crowding the popular venues. The Korean influence shapes the kind of nightlife that thrives here, with KTV venues, late-night seafood barbecues, and Korean-style bar culture mixed in with the Western beach club aesthetic.

Chinese tourists are the second-largest group, though numbers have fluctuated with the political relationship between the two countries. Chinese tour groups tend to book the larger packaged experiences at the established hotels rather than the independent beach bar scene.

Russian tourists, who used to dominate the My Khe strip in the late 2010s, have become less visible since 2022. Some Russian-language signage and Russian-run businesses remain, particularly at the southern end of the strip.

The Vietnamese visitor demographic skews toward domestic tourists from Hanoi and Saigon coming for weekend trips. These groups tend to use the beach during daytime hours and dine at the seafood restaurants rather than party at the beach clubs. The Vietnamese clubbing crowd is more visible at Kala Kala and the indoor clubs across Vo Nguyen Giap than at the daytime beachfront venues.

Cultural norms on My Khe are looser than in the inland districts but still apply. Topless sunbathing is not done and draws negative attention. Public drunkenness at the beach is similarly frowned upon, though the beach clubs maintain enough internal control that most drinking stays inside the venues. Modest beachwear, particularly when walking through the streets adjacent to the beach, is the social norm.

Nearby Areas

An Thuong is 5 to 10 minutes inland on foot, with the expat bar scene and the more conversational pub atmosphere. The two areas function as natural complements: My Khe for beachfront drinks at sunset, An Thuong for the later evening pub crawl.

Bach Dang and the Hai Chau rooftop scene are 12 to 15 minutes west by Grab across either the Dragon Bridge or the Tran Thi Ly Bridge. The Dragon Bridge crossing puts you near the major rooftop venues, while the Tran Thi Ly Bridge leads more directly to the southern Hai Chau venues.

The Son Tra peninsula is 15 to 20 minutes north by Grab, with the Linh Ung Pagoda, the Lady Buddha statue, and forested mountain viewpoints. Worth a daytime visit before settling into the My Khe nightlife.

The Marble Mountains and Non Nuoc are 10 to 15 minutes south, with cave temples, marble-working villages, and a quieter beach section. The southern beach is less developed for nightlife but offers daytime alternatives to the central My Khe crowds.

The An Thuong Night Market sets up in the streets just inland from the beach in the evening hours, with Vietnamese street food vendors and casual seating. It's an inexpensive option for dinner before hitting the beach bars.

Meeting People Nearby

The beach bars themselves can work for casual social meetups, though the table-and-group structure doesn't encourage strangers to mingle the way the An Thuong open-front pubs do. Maia and Kala Kala on weekend nights have the most active social energy, with mixed tourist crowds and the right kind of music for casual conversation.

For more substantial social meetups, the An Thuong scene 5 minutes inland is the better choice. The Mad Den Irish Bar, Funky Donkey, and Minsk Bar are designed around bar-counter conversations and shared seating. For broader context on Da Nang's social scene, see the main Da Nang guide.

The DIFF Fireworks Festival weekends in June and July bring large crowds to the beach for fireworks viewing, with My Khe sometimes serving as a spillover viewing zone for visitors who can't get spots along Bach Dang. The atmosphere at the beach bars on those nights is busier than usual, with strangers crossing paths more easily.

Best Times

  • Sunset hour (around 6 PM in dry season): Best light for beachfront drinks with the sun setting behind the city skyline. Reservations recommended for the better tables
  • Friday and Saturday, 8 PM to midnight: Peak beach club hours with the strongest energy at Maia, Kala Kala, and the larger venues
  • Sunday afternoon: Calmer atmosphere at the beach bars, popular with locals and longer-staying tourists who avoid weekend crowds
  • March through August (dry season): Best beach weather, calm waters, dry evenings, longest viable beach club season
  • September through November: Wet season with frequent storms. Beach bars stay open but outdoor sections close during rain. Currents are stronger; swimming is dangerous
  • DIFF Fireworks Festival, June and July: Beach bars fill on Saturday nights with fireworks viewing crowds. Book ahead at the popular venues
  • Avoid Tet (late January or early February): Many beach venues reduce hours or close. Korean and Chinese tourism drops sharply
  • Korean holiday weekends: Chuseok (autumn), Lunar New Year, and Korean summer vacation periods bring heavy Korean tour group traffic. The KTV venues and Korean restaurants fill first

What Not to Do

  • Do not swim at My Khe Beach at night. No lifeguards, dark water, and stronger currents at night
  • Do not walk on the dark sections of beach alone after midnight. Stay within the lit zones near venues
  • Do not walk Vo Nguyen Giap with your phone in your hand, especially at night. Motorbike snatching targets distracted tourists
  • Do not cross Vo Nguyen Giap outside marked crosswalks. The traffic is heavy and fast
  • Do not engage with anyone offering drugs at beach clubs. Vietnam's drug penalties include the death penalty for trafficking
  • Do not assume KTV venues on the side streets running inland are standard nightclubs. Many include hostess services with separate bill structures
  • Do not leave belongings on the beach while swimming, even during the day. Casual theft does happen
  • Do not pay any beach bar bill without reviewing line items, particularly for table service with shared bottles
  • Do not visit during typhoon warnings. Storms can shut the beach and the venues with little notice
  • Do not assume English is fluent at all beach bars. The major venues (Esco, Maia, Kala Kala) have English-speaking staff; smaller venues do not
  • Do not photograph local fishermen or beach workers without permission, particularly at the working sections of the coast
  • Do not bring outside food or drink onto the beach club terraces. Most venues enforce this politely but firmly
