Zulu Lounge

4.0
(643 reviews)
St. James, Port of Spain

Zulu Lounge brings a different energy to the St. James strip, offering cocktails and hookah in a space that feels intentionally separate from the rum bars and clubs next door. The interior uses warm lighting, upholstered seating, and a layout that allows conversation at volumes below a shout. A bar runs along one wall with a selection that extends past the standard Angostura lineup to include imported spirits and a cocktail menu. Hookah stations are arranged around low tables in the back section, creating a loungey atmosphere that attracts a slightly older, more professional crowd than the surrounding bars. Capacity sits around 80-100. On weekends, the venue fills steadily from 8 PM, peaking around 11 PM before some of the crowd migrates to louder venues on the strip. The music runs at a background-to-medium level early in the evening, ramping up as the night progresses. It's the kind of place where you start the evening before diving into the St. James chaos.

What to Expect

Stepping in from Western Main Road feels like changing channels. The temperature drops (air conditioning works here), the volume drops, and the lighting shifts to warm amber tones. Hookah smoke drifts across the room. People are seated, talking, sipping cocktails. It's a different planet from the bar next door.

Atmosphere

Calm, social, and slightly upscale by St. James standards. The hookah adds a relaxed, communal element. Think pre-game lounge rather than main event.

Music

R&B, neo-soul, and chill soca early in the evening. Tempo and volume increase after 10 PM with more mainstream soca and dancehall mixed in.

Dress Code

Smart casual. The crowd here puts in effort. Collared shirts, clean sneakers or dress shoes, and put-together outfits are the standard. You'd feel out of place in a plain t-shirt.

Best For

Couples, small groups looking for conversation over drinks, and anyone who wants to ease into the St. James scene before the louder venues. Also good for hookah enthusiasts.

Payment

Cash (TTD) and cards accepted. Card machine works more reliably than at most St. James spots.

Cocktails TTD 70-100, beer TTD 30-40, hookah TTD 80-150, premium spirits TTD 60-90 per pour

Insider Tip

Come between 8 and 10 PM for the best atmosphere. The hookah flavors rotate, so ask what's fresh rather than choosing from the menu. The cocktail bartender knows what they're doing; if you describe what you like, they'll build something worth the TTD 100.

Full Review

Zulu Lounge exists in a strange liminal space on the St. James strip. It's too refined for the rum bar crowd and too casual for the Ariapita Avenue set, and that in-between position is exactly what makes it work. The interior has been thought about, which is more than you can say for most venues on Western Main Road.

The bar stocks a range that would be standard on Ariapita but stands out in St. James. Beyond the expected Angostura lineup, there are imported gins, vodkas, and whiskeys. The bartender can actually mix cocktails, which sounds like a low bar until you've spent enough time in St. James to realize how rare that is. A well-made rum sour here costs TTD 80-90 and tastes like someone cared about the result.

Hookah is the other draw. The flavors rotate and the quality is consistent. A session runs TTD 80-150 depending on the flavor and whether you're sharing. The hookah section at the back creates a natural gathering point where tables merge into a communal zone. Conversations cross between groups more easily here than at a conventional bar.

The crowd shifts through the evening. Early arrivals (7-9 PM) are couples and small groups having a civilized drink. By 10 PM, the energy lifts as people arrive who plan to use Zulu as a launching pad for the louder clubs. After 11 PM, some stay while others migrate to Frankie's or Drink! down the road.

The one caveat is capacity. At 80-100 people, it fills quickly on Friday and Saturday nights. Arriving before 9 PM is smart if you want a hookah station. After 10 PM, standing room only becomes the reality, and the lounge atmosphere starts giving way to bar energy.

The Neighborhood

Zulu Lounge sits on the St. James strip between Drink! and Pelican Inn. The contrast with its neighbors is the whole point. Doubles and gyro vendors are right outside. A 5-minute walk east takes you to the Savannah. The venue serves as a natural starting point before moving to louder spots on the strip.

Getting There

Taxi from downtown Port of Spain costs TTD 30-50 (10 minutes). From Woodbrook/Ariapita Avenue, TTD 20-40. The lounge is on Western Main Road in St. James with signage visible from the street. Ask for 'Zulu in St. James' and any driver will know.
