Bauhaus Bar

Lamai, Koh Samui

Bauhaus Bar is Lamai's main nightclub, occupying a large open-air structure that has been the district's entertainment anchor for several years. The building has a main stage at one end for live performances, a dance floor in the center, and bar stations along both walls. The ceiling is high and the sides are partially open, which keeps the temperature bearable on busy nights. Capacity runs to several hundred people when full. The programming alternates between live bands, which play several nights a week, and DJ sets on other evenings. The crowd skews slightly older than Chaweng's clubs and has a higher proportion of longer-stay visitors and Samui expats than weekend tourists on short breaks.

Full Review

Bauhaus is the kind of venue that anchors a smaller nightlife district without defining it entirely. Lamai needs a club that can hold a reasonable crowd on a busy night, and Bauhaus does that reliably. The open-air format suits the island's climate and gives the space a social character that enclosed clubs sometimes lack.

The live band nights are the stronger offering. Watching a reggae or rock cover band in an open-sided tropical structure while the sea air circulates is the kind of experience Koh Samui's nightlife should offer more of. The quality of the bands varies, but the atmosphere on a good night is genuinely enjoyable. DJ nights are serviceable but don't offer anything that distinguishes Bauhaus from equivalent venues in Chaweng.

The crowd at Bauhaus reflects Lamai's demographic: older than Chaweng, more expats and long-term visitors, fewer package tourists on five-night breaks. Conversations at the bar are more likely to yield useful local knowledge than similar conversations in the island's bigger clubs. People have been here long enough to have opinions.

For visitors who've already done the Chaweng circuit and want to explore Lamai's smaller scene, Bauhaus is the logical first stop. For visitors whose entire time on Samui is based in Lamai, it's the closest thing to a reliable central social hub.
