High Spirit
High Spirit occupies the top floor of a building adjacent to the New Africa Hotel on the edge of Dar es Salaam's city center, offering sweeping views of the harbor, the ferry terminal, and the Indian Ocean beyond. The space is open-air with a covered bar area, scattered tables along a railing that drops away toward the water, and a DJ booth that fires up on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Capacity sits around 150-200 people, and on a good Friday it fills completely. The crowd is a cross-section of Dar's social strata: diplomats, NGO country directors, Tanzanian business owners, airline crews, and tourists who've found their way here through word of mouth. The cocktail menu runs 15-20 options, with the bartenders competent at classics and a few local twists using passion fruit and tamarind. Beer selection includes Safari Lager, Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, and a few imports. The rooftop catches the ocean breeze, making it one of the few venues in Dar where you don't sweat through your shirt by 9 PM.
What to Expect
You take an elevator or climb stairs to the top floor and step out into open air with the harbor spread below. The bar runs along one side, tables scatter across the terrace, and the ocean breeze hits immediately. Early evening is mellow with small groups drinking and watching the sunset. By 10 PM on weekends, the DJ has the volume up and people are standing, drinks in hand, moving between conversations.
Breezy, social, and slightly upscale. The rooftop setting keeps things relaxed early, then shifts to a proper party vibe on weekend nights.
Afrobeats, Bongo Flava, amapiano, and commercial house. Earlier hours feature ambient/lounge music.
Smart casual. Collared shirts and closed shoes for men are typical. The crowd dresses up more than the average Dar bar.
Sundowner drinks with a view, Friday night socializing, couples looking for a scenic evening out
Cash (TZS) preferred. Cards accepted but sometimes the machine is down. Mobile money (M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa) works.

Full Review
High Spirit earns its reputation as Dar es Salaam's best rooftop venue on the strength of its location alone. The harbor view is the real product here, and on a clear evening with the sun dropping behind the city skyline, it delivers something no ground-level bar can match. The space is well-designed for a tropical rooftop: open sides catch cross-breezes, the covered bar area provides shelter if it rains, and the layout creates enough separation between tables that conversations don't bleed into each other.
The drinks are solid without being remarkable. Cocktails land in the competent range. The bartenders know their way around a mojito and can handle most classic requests. The local twists (passion fruit daiquiri, tamarind sour) are worth trying. Beer is cold, which in Dar matters more than variety. Food is available but secondary to the bar operation; the grilled items are decent, the more ambitious plates less consistent.
The crowd shifts through the week. Monday through Wednesday is quiet, with a handful of hotel guests and a few regulars. Thursday brings the first wave of the weekend crowd, mainly expats and NGO staff. Friday is the main event, when the terrace fills and the DJ pushes the energy up. Saturday draws a more Tanzanian crowd with a slightly later start time. Sunday afternoon sessions are relaxed.
Compared to Level 8 at the Hyatt, High Spirit is less polished but has more character. The view is arguably better, the prices are lower, and the atmosphere feels less corporate. It's the rooftop that Dar's social scene gravitates toward when it wants something with a pulse.
The Neighborhood
High Spirit sits at the edge of the city center near the waterfront, not in the Masaki peninsula itself but within easy Bolt distance. The New Africa Hotel area is commercial and relatively safe during the evening. The ferry terminal is visible from the terrace, and the harbor traffic adds to the view. After High Spirit, most people Bolt to Masaki for dinner or another drink.
