Sandton, Johannesburg

Harem is a lounge and nightclub in the Sandton area that blends Moroccan-inspired design with a hookah bar and weekend DJ programming. The interior features low seating, ornate textiles, warm lighting through pierced metal lanterns, and private alcove areas that create a sense of intimacy despite the venue's capacity. Hookah service is central to the experience, with an extensive menu of flavored tobacco served through premium pipes. The drinks menu covers cocktails, champagne, and a spirit selection that leans toward premium labels. The music shifts from background lounge during dinner hours to full DJ sets later in the evening.

What to Expect

An atmospheric lounge that gradually transforms into a club as the evening progresses. Early arrivals get the candlelit, hookah-smoking, conversational experience. Late arrivals get the DJ, the dance floor, and the full Sandton crowd. Both versions work.

Atmosphere

Atmospheric, intimate, and progressively energetic. The design creates a sense of occasion that most venues in this category lack.

Music

Lounge music and deep house during dinner hours. Amapiano, Afrobeats, hip-hop, and house during club hours.

Dress Code

Smart casual to upscale. The Moroccan aesthetic encourages a dressed-up approach. No sportswear.

Best For

Groups wanting a hookah-focused evening that transitions into a party. Good for mixed groups and couples who want atmosphere over pure nightclub intensity.

Payment

Cards and cash accepted. Table minimums apply for private alcoves on weekends.

Full Review

Harem creates an atmosphere that most Sandton venues don't attempt. Where Kong and Taboo go for scale and production, Harem goes for mood. The Moroccan-inspired interior is well-executed: genuine pierced metal lanterns cast patterns on the walls, the low seating encourages relaxation rather than posturing, and the private alcoves create spaces where groups can settle in for hours.

The hookah service is the distinguishing feature. The menu lists over 20 flavors, from traditional apple and mint to more creative blends involving berry, chocolate, and citrus combinations. Premium hookah setups (ZAR 250-350) use higher-quality tobacco and include a larger pipe with better airflow. The staff maintain the coals throughout the evening without being asked, which is a detail that separates good hookah service from mediocre.

Cocktails are solidly made if not groundbreaking. The menu favors familiar names (Old Fashioned, Espresso Martini, Mojito) executed with premium spirits. A signature Harem cocktail built on rum, pomegranate, and rose water (ZAR 130) fits the theme and tastes better than most themed drinks at most themed bars.

The evening's progression from lounge to club is managed well. The lighting shifts, the music volume increases gradually, and by 11 PM the center of the venue functions as a dance floor while the alcoves continue as drinking and hookah spaces. You can participate in either mode or both.

The crowd is Sandton-affluent but slightly less status-competitive than at Kong or Taboo. The hookah and lounge elements attract people who want to spend time rather than be seen spending money. Mixed groups and couples are more common than at the pure nightclub venues.

Private alcoves should be booked in advance for Friday and Saturday. Without a booking, you'll have access to the main bar and communal seating, which is fine but misses the venue's best feature.

Security is in line with Sandton standards. Door vetting, bag checks, and internal monitoring. The venue's location in the Sandton area benefits from the district's broader security infrastructure.

The Neighborhood

In the greater Sandton area. The surrounding blocks have restaurants suitable for pre-venue dinner. Other Sandton nightlife venues are within a short Uber ride.

Getting There

Uber from central Sandton costs ZAR 20-40, from Rosebank ZAR 40-70, from Maboneng ZAR 80-130. The venue entrance is marked and accessible from the main road.
