Portions are oversized by design. The idea is that you eat well for very little money, and the place delivers on that promise better than almost anywhere in Asuncion. A full meal with a beer costs about 30,000-40,000 PYG. The crowd at lunch is office workers from surrounding government buildings. In the evening, it transitions to a mix of students, neighborhood regulars, and families.

Waiters navigate the crowded floor with trays loaded with plates that wouldn't look out of place at a family gathering. The food arrives fast and in quantities that suggest the kitchen wants you to leave full. The atmosphere is communal; sharing a table with strangers is normal when the place is busy.

El Bolsi exists to feed people, and it does this with impressive efficiency. The lunch rush between noon and 2 PM is a spectacle: the room fills completely, waiters sprint between tables, and plates arrive loaded with food that could stretch across two meals. The milanesa napolitana is a breaded cutlet the size of a dinner plate, topped with ham, cheese, and tomato sauce, served with fries or mandioca. At 30,000 PYG it's one of the best food values in Asuncion.
The surubi fish, a Paraguayan staple from the Paraguay River, is prepared simply: grilled or fried, with lemon and a side of rice. At 25,000-35,000 PYG it's fresh and generous. The sopa paraguaya is a must-order side dish: a dense, savory cornbread made with cheese, onion, and milk. It's not soup despite the name, and it's one of Paraguay's most distinctive foods.
As a nightlife venue, El Bolsi is not what most people are looking for. It closes relatively early and the drinking is incidental to the eating. But as a dinner stop before a night out in Centro, it's hard to beat. Fill up on milanesa and a couple of beers for under 50,000 PYG, then walk to Lido Bar for the evening's conversation.
The area around Plaza Uruguaya where El Bolsi sits is safe during business hours and early evening but thins out after dark. Don't linger in the surrounding streets once the restaurant crowd disperses. Order a Bolt from your table when you're ready to leave.
The Neighborhood
El Bolsi is near Plaza Uruguaya in Centro, about a 10-minute walk from Lido Bar along Calle Palma. The surrounding area has government buildings, small shops, and other traditional restaurants. The Plaza itself is a public square with benches and trees, pleasant during the day but best avoided at night.
Getting There
A Bolt from Villa Morra takes 15-20 minutes. From Lido Bar, it's a 10-minute walk along Calle Palma heading south toward Plaza Uruguaya. Colectivo buses pass through the area on multiple routes.
