Mokha Cafe & Lounge
Mokha Cafe and Lounge occupies a ground-floor space within the Grand Hyatt Muscat, offering a mellower alternative to the hotel's more energetic venues. The space opens onto a garden terrace with outdoor seating surrounded by landscaped grounds, palm trees, and ambient lighting. Inside, the decor blends Arabic design elements with contemporary lounge furniture: low seating, brass coffee tables, patterned cushions, and warm lighting from lantern-style fixtures. Capacity is about 60 between the indoor area and the terrace. Shisha (hookah) is the primary draw, with a selection of flavored tobaccos prepared by dedicated staff. The drink menu covers Arabic coffee, cocktails, wines, and a full spirits range. The food offering is light: mezze, flatbreads, and small plates. Live acoustic music appears on select evenings, typically an oud player or small ensemble performing Arabic and Mediterranean melodies. The crowd is a mix of hotel guests seeking a quiet evening, expat couples, and Omani professionals who appreciate the relaxed setting.
What to Expect
A transition from the Grand Hyatt's marble lobby into a warmly lit lounge with Arabic-influenced decor. The terrace beyond offers garden seating under palm trees. The aroma of shisha and Arabic coffee sets the tone. The atmosphere is peaceful and conversational.
Calm, aromatic, and unhurried. The garden terrace, shisha smoke, and acoustic music create a sanctuary from Muscat's daytime intensity.
Live Arabic and Mediterranean acoustic music on select evenings. Background lounge and ambient music otherwise.
Smart casual. The relaxed atmosphere doesn't demand formality, but the hotel setting means shorts and flip-flops feel out of place.
Shisha enthusiasts, couples wanting a quiet evening, hotel guests seeking a mellow alternative to the bar and club, anyone who appreciates Arabic coffee and conversation
Cards accepted. Hotel guests can charge to their room. Cash (OMR) works.

Full Review
Mokha is the Grand Hyatt's gentlest venue, and in Muscat's nightlife context, that gentleness fills a real need. After a week of work in the Gulf heat, sitting on a garden terrace with a well-prepared shisha, an Arabic coffee, and soft oud music in the background is exactly the kind of evening that makes Muscat livable.
The shisha preparation is careful. The staff know the difference between a good hookah and a bad one, and they deliver the former consistently. The coals are managed attentively, with staff returning to check and refresh without being asked. The tobacco selection covers the standard flavored range, with double apple and mint being the most popular and the most reliably good. The equipment is clean and well-maintained.
The terrace is the heart of the venue. The Grand Hyatt's landscaped grounds provide a green, peaceful backdrop. Palm trees, ambient lighting, and comfortable outdoor seating create an environment that feels more like a private garden than a hotel bar. On cooler evenings (October through March), the terrace is the best outdoor drinking spot in Qurum.
The drinks complement the shisha without competing for attention. Arabic coffee, thick and aromatic, served in small cups, is the most characterful option. The cocktails are competent but not the focus. Wine by the glass is a reasonable choice with the mezze plates.
The live music on select evenings elevates the experience. An oud player working through classical Arabic melodies in this setting creates an atmosphere that's specifically and beautifully Omani. These performances don't happen every night, so asking at reception about the schedule is worthwhile.
Compared to John Barry's in the same hotel, Mokha is quieter, more refined, and more Middle Eastern in character. John Barry's is where you go for a pint. Mokha is where you go when you want to slow down. Both have their place in an evening at the Grand Hyatt.
