Full Review
Flying Dutchmen Cocktails operates inside a Dutch national monument at Singel 460, and the building does half the work before the first drink arrives. The space is handsome in the way that only centuries-old Amsterdam canal houses can be: high ceilings, original details, and a sense of permanence. Behind the bar sits the largest back bar in the Netherlands, holding over 900 spirits arranged with a collector's care.
Tess Posthumus built the programme around neo-classics and original creations, and the team executes both with visible precision. The bartenders are knowledgeable and happy to guide you through the options, particularly the whisky and rum sections of that enormous back bar. Service is warm but professional. The venue stays open until 04:00 every night, making it one of the few serious cocktail bars in Amsterdam where you can drink well into the early morning.
Flying Dutchmen competes with Tales and Spirits and Door 74 for Amsterdam's cocktail crown, but it occupies a different niche. The monument setting gives it gravitas that purpose-built bars can't replicate. The 04:00 closing time means it catches the post-dinner crowd that other cocktail bars lose at midnight. The spirits collection alone justifies a visit for anyone interested in rum, whisky, or gin.
No reservations needed. Arrive between 17:00 and 19:00 to sit at the bar and have an unhurried conversation with the team. Later in the evening, the pace picks up and the room fills. Budget accordingly: this is not a cheap night out, but the quality justifies the spend.
The Neighborhood
Flying Dutchmen sits on Singel at the edge of the Flower Market strip, giving it a canal-side position within easy reach of both Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein. The monument building grounds it in Amsterdam's architectural heritage.
