Tosho

Dostyk Avenue, Almaty

Tosho brings Japanese bar culture to Almaty's Dostyk corridor, occupying a refined ground-floor space with clean lines, natural wood, and subtle lighting. The bar seats 12 on stools facing a back-lit wall of Japanese whisky, sake, and shochu. Another 30 seats spread across small tables in the main room. The cocktail menu draws from Japanese techniques and ingredients: yuzu, shiso, matcha, and umami-forward elements appear alongside classic spirits. Sake is served properly, with temperature recommendations for each variety. A small food menu offers Japanese bar snacks: edamame, gyoza, yakitori, and a few sashimi options.

Full Review

Tosho is a surprise in a city where nightlife tends toward either high-volume clubs or standard beer bars. The attention to Japanese bar traditions is genuine: the ice is hand-cut for whisky service, sake temperatures are matched to the variety, and the cocktails use Japanese mixing techniques that prioritize precision over spectacle.

The whisky collection is the deepest in Almaty, covering Japanese distilleries from Suntory and Nikka to smaller producers, alongside a well-chosen selection of Scotch and bourbon. The sake list covers junmai, ginjo, and daiginjo styles with helpful tasting notes. Staff can guide newcomers without condescension.

The food menu supports the drinks rather than competing with them. Gyoza are pan-fried crisp, yakitori is charcoal-grilled, and the edamame arrives salted and warm. It's bar food elevated to complement what's in your glass.

The atmosphere works because of the scale. With fewer than 45 seats, Tosho stays intimate even when full. Conversations happen at normal volume. There's no competition with music or other tables. The experience is closer to a private bar than a public venue.

Tosho attracts a specific crowd: people who care about what they're drinking and are willing to pay a premium for quality and environment. It's not for everyone, and it doesn't try to be. But for its target audience, it's the best bar in Almaty.

The Neighborhood

On the Dostyk Avenue strip, a few minutes' walk from other bars and clubs. Works well as a first stop for a refined drink before the evening moves to louder venues.
