Full Review

Nonkiya is a standing bar in Jan Jan Yokocho that opens at 8am, which tells you everything about its priorities. The space is narrow, with a counter running along one wall and just enough room for a dozen people to stand without touching elbows. The star attraction is doteyaki, a beef tendon stew simmered in miso that costs 100 yen per stick. That price hasn't moved in years.

Morning regulars tend to be older men from the neighborhood who treat this as their breakfast spot. By lunchtime, the crowd shifts to include food-focused tourists and younger Osaka residents who've read about the place online. The atmosphere stays consistent regardless: loud, smoky, and efficient. You stand, you order, you eat, you drink. The bar runs on turnover, not lingering.

In a district full of budget drinking options, Nonkiya holds a special position because of the food. Most Shinsekai standing bars serve drinks with basic snacks. Here, the doteyaki is genuinely excellent, slow-cooked and deeply flavored. Combined with beer or shochu at 200 to 400 yen, the total spend for a satisfying session rarely exceeds 1,500 yen.

The doteyaki sells out on busy weekends, so early arrival pays off. The bar closes at 8pm, which means this is a daytime or early evening destination. Plan your visit before dinner rather than after. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The surrounding Jan Jan Yokocho arcade has other food stalls and shops worth exploring while you're in the area, so give yourself extra time.

The Neighborhood

Nonkiya anchors one end of Jan Jan Yokocho, Shinsekai's covered shopping arcade that has served as the neighborhood's social spine for generations. The arcade connects the bar to a string of similar budget spots stretching toward Tsutenkaku, making it a natural starting point for a Shinsekai drinking session.

Getting There

Dobutsuen-mae Station puts you within a 3-minute walk on either the Midosuji or Sakaisuji lines. Enter Jan Jan Yokocho from the south end and Nonkiya is visible on the left side of the covered arcade.
